Default Engine skid plate

What is the consensus on installing a skid plate to protect the engine? It's not liek I go off-roading in my car, but there are some scary potholes around here that lay hidden under puddles, not to mention crap in the road.

unlikely to be necessary unless you have lowered the car. I have one and my car is lowered.

^^^ yep my car is lowered like UCrazyKid with the x74 and so we both have the Porsche Engine Protection Plate (996-107-981-00).

So unless you are really low to the ground then probably un-necessary.

My car is lowered with the RoW M030 kit, which isn't that low, but figured I would install it anyway. For under $100, I figured why not.

FYI, I don't think it will help during roll overs.... you might want to ask Ted to verify that!

Sorry Ted, I couldn't resist! Looks like you and I will both be Porscheless soon! However, you'll be able to get another one much quicker than I will.

I've got one, and my car isn't lowered. It's cheap insurance against the kind of debris you can encounter on urban expressways around here...

My car already had the protection plate installed when I bought the car. In fact, I thought the plate was a stock part. My car is not lowered and the plate has scrapes on it so it is obviously working. Although, since the plate hangs down from the engine by about an inch or so, it will scrape before an unprotected engine would.

It's cheap insurance if you are prone to scrapping.

Absolutely do it. Then go back and take a look at it some time later and you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner. It will be all scraped, etc., when you check it out.

I have the x74 and I do not have the plate.

The protection it offers seems pretty limited and I don't see how it could have a positive impact on cooling.

I dont think its necessary, even though the plate has scrapes doesnt mean its protectecting anything since it is lower than the pan... might as well put these on

In my experience, it has no impact on cooling whatsoever.

Way back in the dark ages of air/oil cooled Porsches, some engine protection did seem to hold heat, and I think that's created this folklore. But I have a habit of looking at the OBD coolant temp readout for amusement when I'm stuck in traffic. I've got more normative data than I care to admit, about my car at least, and I can assure you that it's made no discernible difference whatsoever.

I had one put on when I blew out my RMS. My mechanic indicated that it was an option on the 996, but it looks like they made it standard on the 997.

About a week after I had it put on, I bottomed out front and back driving down a road that has a strange curb transition in the strangest place--didn't see it in time to slow down enough, had the very sickening sound of cement/metal/plastic contact from both front and rear. I checked under afterwards, and boy am I glad I had that plate on.

My car is not lowered, and I definitely recommend the plate. I don't think I have ever hit it since that incident, but $150 for the plate vs. major engine repair for one freak situation is an easy decision to make.
