Default 996 3.6l swap to 997 3.8l

Hey everyone, been lurking in the shadows for a while, but now have a question. Has anyone done a 3.6 to 3.8 swap, if so what is involved?
do you also have to use a 997 tranny? Im thinking about doing this swap to my 2002 c4s. Oh ya heres a picName: DSC00518.jpg

Just curious, why swap??? Do you need a new engine and you're thinking about upgrading while you're at it??? Or are you just looking for more HP??

I have no idea on this but based on the other Porsche engine swaps discussed here it would probably be swap your 02 for a 997.

Not really feasable ($$$$$$$), different electronics, would cost a fortune and kill resale as bad as a sc would, might as well just do that.

Default Low oil Pressure

Several months ago I experienced the infamous left hand corner massife amounts of smoke ejection out the tail pipe! After careful inspection everything seemed allright. About a month later I noticed the oil pressure gauge dropping. Oil pressure stays between 1 and 3 but does not raise with higher rpm's any more. Did an oil change and found slight particles in old oil, nothing too alarming. HOWEVER after running with new oil and hoping oil pressure would resurface it did not. Apon further investigation of new oil there was a fair amount of new shavings making me believe I have a spun bearing or worse!
Because rebuild sbeing cost prohibitive iv'e decided to go a different route. I had found a new x50 3.6l motor for a good price but unfotunately missed the oppertunity. Now Iv'e found a 3.8l motor thats a new reman from porsche tha was blueprinted with reworked heads with output of a 3.8l x51 or slightly more.

Why would it kill resale? Some have said it was very feasable, others have told me that the 997 tranny is completely differrent and a 996 tranny wont bolt to a 3.8l?

Geez - I hope this doesn't happen to my 2002!

Good reason to inquire, but the project would no doubt be +$ to sort through. The people to really ask the question of are the ones who will be doing the work. You can figure on a new computer for sure, and it sounds like maybe a trans as well. Problem is the computers these days look for input from every little thing and if the pins on the 996 plugs don't line up with the pins on the 997 plugs I can imagine the project would start taking a lot of time ( and hence $) to figure out.

As an example, a customer once paid my mechanic to install a VW turbodiesel engine into his VW synchro van. The customer even supplied the wiring kit. Well, the wiring kit was wrong, the computer (and I think some hardware) was damaged, and by the time the job was finally sorted a year later, the customer could have bought pretty much any suv/camper van he wanted and come out ahead $-wise..

Not to dampen your enthusiasm, I bet it would be as economical to buy a new crate engine from Porsche, install it in the 2002, sell the 20002, and buy a 997 as it would be to engineer this swap. This supposition includes the consideration that the 996 becomes virtually un-saleable after the swap. Think about it, who would pay good money for a *bastard* 996 when a 997 can be had for just a few $ more?

EdiC4S:

There is a different solution.
Did you hear something about Silsleeve from Autofarm?

They are fantastic in Porsche watercooled motors.

Here you have more info.

http://www.autofarm.co.uk/engines/water_cooled

They can up your capacity to 3,8 or 4.0 l

The engineer Nick Fulljames would rebuild a boxer engine to make it unbreable and more powerful, with the same essence of OEM Porsche motors

A 3.4 to 3.6 or 3.8 is fairly well figured out swap at this point and not much of a science project. They are mostly plug n play and the shops that know how to do it have the items that do need to be tweeked well sorted out; egas, variocam plus, fuel sender, etc.

The 3.8 is a brand new motor from porsche with minor upgrades, it may have warranty. As far as swap goes I'm trying to get in contact with someone who has done this and can therefore enlighten me as to what is involved.
There are no shop's anywhere close to me with any kind of real expirience with 996's. There for it's turning into a winter project in my shop.

Nice looking C4S.

Drop a Turbo in there and cut some holes and you're done.

Sorry to change the subject but why not supercharge your current engine?

As stated I probably have a blown motor. So, it more than likely will be a crate motor.

Holes are the easy part, Turbo motor not so easy!
