Ignition removale on 996
I am replacing the ignition/steering lock mechanism on a '99 996. If you have done this, I would appreciate your help. Thank you

Welcome to Rennlist. You can also do a search on "ignition" and you will find dozens of hits.
Also, it is customary for Rennlist "newbies" to post some pics and tell us a little about their P-car. You can post pics after you have logged a minimum of 5 posts.

I am feeling what I think are the first early symptoms of a bad ignition switch as well.
It feels tight to turn the key, and sometimes the key gets slightly stuck when removing from the switch.
Or, sometimes the key removes, but it doesn't click, so that the key-in-ignition alert doesn't go off and the remote won't lock the car.
I want to try to replace the switch myself, but I am hoping it will last thru' the summer, coz' I would prefer not to do this in my sauna-garage!
Which of these 2 switches is the correct part? They are listed on ebay and both listed the 996 together with the Boxster, Audi, VW.

Just look at the one thats installed now. Obviously if you take a look at the switch and you see a solid black one, then buy another solid black one. If you see black with white then buy the black with white one. I would bet you've got a solid black one seeing as you've got an 02.
Are you trying to replace the whole steering lock and ignition switch assembly or just the electrical switch portion? I've you've got the black one it may be worth your while to get the whole new assembly. I think they're around 120 bucks. It comes with the black and white switch which is an updated part and in my experience doesn't fail as often.
