Default Remote failed, considering aftermarket alarm

Hi,
Well, my remote has stopped working (tried all the tricks, ie flipping the battery, pressing unlock while in the key hole), and nothing has worked. So i was thinking, why not jsut get a complete new alarm system (lock/unlocking, and remote starter) for the car. Has anyone done this? Does this work? My key to the car still works and i called my dealer, he was like, "200 dollars for the key and another 60 for programming." So for 260 dollars, can't I just get a new alarm system. As always, thanks for the input.

you can probably get an aftermarket alarm to lock and unlock your doors with sirens. But i doubt it is easy to get your car to remote start.

it really wouldnt be that hard to do but it would make you car really easy to steal and if it was recovered you wouldnt get a check

firehawk, what do you mean? Insurance companies wont pay if your car gets stolen if it has a remote start?

I have friend that does alarms including remote starts (for automatics). He is a perfectionist so researches first time does an unfamilar car.

It is important that the installer is meticulous, because some of the car's diodes can be damaged very easily (hooking up/touching a wrong wire).

Those alarms are way over few hundred dollars. And the first step would be to find someone to uninstall/disable the current alarm, which would also require specialized skill.

I have bought keys for my 911 (when girlfriend misplaced them (albeit later found them), and it cost near $100, so 200 for the 996 key could make sense (the $60 for programming is a labor rate).

Have you tried replacing the battery in the key?

Mine too has become progressively weaker so I was going to go to batteries plus to get a new battery for my 996 key (and my 911 key since it seems to have died because the key light stoped working.

Have others successfully replaced the battery in their 996 key/remote?

Thank you.

hi, i have replaced the battery, I just went to radio shack and got one there, about 4 dollars. hope this helps. Does you friend know where I can get a copy of our 996's wire diagram? With this, I think i am able to add the keyless entry myself and i will leave the remote starter for a professional.

Thanks,

Aftermarket alarms on vehicles that need "dealership key programming" typically require the owner to have their spare key FOB hidden in the car 24/7 to enable the aftermaket alarm to work properly. I'd say the $260 is a bargain.

Do you really need remote start? The Porsche alarm is so smooth.

I have not spoken with him in some while. The information you seek is wire color/location (if it is distributed by Porsche) it would be on the database (book/online) alarm techs use when installing alarms in a given car.

PM me for his number if you want to speak with him.

don't take this the wrong way, but the concept of installing an aftermarket alarm that is going to;
1) work better than the one designed and installed by porsche
and
2) cost less than $260
....is quite ridiculous.

If you CAN find one for that cost, would you seriously trust it to secure your 911?

A long time ago I made the mistake of ordering a car (not a Porsche) without an alarm and decided afterwards that I needed one. That thing cost me an arm and a leg and never worked properly from day one. Not a mistake I will ever repeat.......
