GAUGES
Hope this hasn't been tackled before, but actually would like to switch current black on white gauges to the more conventional white on black. Easy? Plug-n-play? Does odo reside in ECU and not with gauge cluster? Thanks!

Do a search on "gauge faces" or just "faces." You have to be extremely careful about putting the indicator needles back in the EXACT position that they were in prior to removing them. One guy recommended taking a couple of close up pics prior to removing the needles, so you have a reference point when re-installing them.

I made every attempt to record the exact position of the needles when I installed the gauge faces on my Mustang (went from the stock 140mph to the 200mph for the speedo and all the rest, plus from white on black to black on white).
So take your time if you decide to do it.

Do you have to remove the whole insturment pod to get the guage faces? I actually have some gunk on the inside of the glass of one of mine and am not sure how to get to the back of the glass to clean it. Can the glass be removed without removing the entire cluster?

Yes, you have to remove the gauge pod, and then separate the cluster. The "glass" is very delicate and can be separated only as one piece. It is merely attached with clips. I also had some sort or cleaner on the inside of the glass, and spent time with clear plastic cleaner and various cotton cloths and q-tips.

I assume this process is the same for a 996 as it is for a Boxster?

I will tell you this, when you pull the needles off make 100% sure you pull strait up.If you twist as your pulliing them you are taking a risk of knocking off the retaining clip on the underside of the needle..Be carefull with this part, this is the only tricky one in the DIY.Good luck
