Recently had a pain free install of an Optima battery so thought I'd share. I'm not much of a fabricator so I ordered an aluminum plate made for the 996/986 from Yellow Dog Motorsports (563) 386 0675. I ordered an Optima 34R Red Top battery. Make sure it is the "R" for reverse poles so the poles are in the correct position and you won't have to extend the +ve battery cable. The easiest way to get the old battery out by myself was to stand in the trunk. As it is the +ve battery cable is barely long enough so I had to loosen where it attaches to the firewall to connect it, and then tighten it back down. If you don't want to have to reprogram you radio code, attach a jumper battery. Took less than an hour in all.

I hope you have better luck than I've had with the OPtimas. I'm on the 2nd one in the Boxster and Carrera. The first ones lasted just under a year and barly over a year. Glad I bought them from Costco who honered the 2 year warrenty with a 100% refund. I went back and repurchased them at the higher prevailing prices.
My '99 Jeep Cherokee is still on the original factory battery, which is pretty unbelievable as the Porsches are on #3. I'm uncertain if I will go the Optima onthe Jeep when it's time.

I have had optimas in the past and have never had any issues. I appreciated the ability to custom mount in some projects I had in the past that called for angled applications... Its unfortunate that your experiences werent isolated. But you gotta love costco for that....
