Default 996 C2 synchro problem?

Hi, thank you for any advice. My 996 pops out of second above 4000 RPM's, and seems fine other than that. If I stay below 4000 it's fine. No other gear is affected. Any ideas?
Thanks

Not an uncommon problem. Unfortunately the fix is to replace the entire transmission. What year is the car? Are you under warranty? Porsche may repair under good will gesture if you push.

Sorry for the bad news.

Lisa, one more thing. How many Porsche's do you have? I did a quick search to see if I could get more info on the year of your car and I found you posting that you have:
2002 996 TT
2000 Boxster
1999 996
1990 964 C4
1982 911SC

That's a lot of cars! Or are you a Porsche mechanic?

I would first check the shifter linkage to make sure it is allowing the gear to completly engage.

Hi guys, yes I have a lot of cars, and no I'm not a professional mechanic... I am the tech. chair for the local PCA though.... So shift linkage (I already thought of), and replacing the tranny (not the best news).... Nothing else?

Unfortunately Porsche does not sell internal parts for 996 transmissions. This was the current position of Porsche as of April 2007.

According to Joel Reiser (spoke with him this morning) Porsche is now selling parts for the 996 transmission.

Change the fluid first. I had a problem with second and a change to BG fluid cured it entirely. It is worth a shot given the cost of the alternatives. Also, Porsche is selling syncros and other parts now. Powerhaus in Colorado (?) has also been selling 996 transaxle parts for a while now.

Transmission internals for the 996 gearbox have been available from Porsche since the end of last summer.

It sounds like the gear is never fully engaged. You may want to try changing the clutch fluid to see if you aren't getting enough pressure on the plate since it is a high RPM issue that you are having. It may also be a combination of that and your throw adjustments near the shifter are set too far back (thus reducing the throw distance when traveling into second).

I've never experienced this problem but I was told it's a matter of when, not if, it will happen to my car. There are those who claim that this calamity awaits all 996 trannies that came with wet sump engines.

How many miles do you have on your tranny?

6 speed getrag transmission parts and repairs are now available through the dealers. You probably need a new second gear and synchro hub assy. The teeth that hold the synchro hub onto the gear get rounded and no longer hold the hub and the gear together, which is what causes it to pop out. Repairing it might be cheaper but it may be worth the piece of mind to get a whole new box.

Any idea how much the repair job would cost???
