Looking for a Stock air box
Hi Fellas,
I think my MAF sensor went on me this past weekend. I was driving my car fairly hard Fri night resulting in PSM and ABS light coming illuminating on my way home. There was acceleration hesitation but since I was on the highway, it appeared to be fine.
Later that day, I took it out and started OK. I was in town and punched it up to 5K RPM and immediately the car started idling poorly. It was surging so bad for a while that I had to feather the clutch and keep it in 2nd gear while limping to my indy garage.
It is during the limp that the CEL light came on. I just cleaned the non-oem air filter several hundred miles ago. I don't know the fault codes yet but will know tomorrow. Doing the search has me suspecting that the non oem intake caused my MAF to fail.
The car has 70K miles and I don't know if it is the original MAF sensor. Although it is discussed that MAF sensors generally go at this mileage, I would still like to convert it back to stock because I have PSE and am happy with that alone.
Thanks
Chao

Bump. No one has an air box for a MK1 kicking around in their garage for Sale? Anyone have suggestions to get a hold of one other than a stealership?

Sounds like you bought one of those POS K&N CAI's.
I also burned my fingers on that company. Welcome to the club.
Here you go :
Sunset Porsche : cost +15% : 1-800-346-0182
There's also a couple of salvage places around, you can see their ads in places such as 'Panorama' magazine.

Hi Yves,
I inherited it. Apparently MAF sensors go around 70K miles. Trying to figure out if it is the POS K&N CAI's or just age...
Thanks for the help.

No, not really. Aparently the MAF design in the first generation of the 996 model was slightly different from the post 2001 design.
The only way to make the K&N work on your 99 model is :
- buy the latest generation 996 MAF (I think officially it's listed as a 'Boxter' part)
-install a 'dry' kone filter instead of the oiled piece of K&N junk.
There's lots of posts about his, please perfom a search. If you can't find it, drop me a PM and I'll help you out.

I have been reading MAF posts here and on Renntech.org all weekend. I didn't know if the 'Boxter part will work so I let my Indy order it.
I may just get the "Boxter" one for back up because it is just an easy fix. you have an idea for the part number? The darn thing is so expensive. Just under $500 at the dealer, my Indy got it for $420. I have seen prices around $280 on the web though..

Use Paragon-products.com or pelican parts for those type of parts. Should have cost you $250. Also, there is a difference between the ones for e-gas and non-egas equiped cars.
As for the K&N filter, it gets oil on the MAF that you can spray off with electronics parts cleaner (made by CRC 'QD Electronics Cleaner') that you can buy at most auto parts stores for $4. You will have to see what type of screws are holding your MAF in place. It will either be a hex or a torx head screw; be sure you have a set of each since the rest of the car uses both (metric hex/torx are universal).
I think you may have over-reacted to your problem, but I do know what it is like when you think your car is dying. You may also need to disconnect your battery (neg side) to reset your CEL.

This is where I ordered mine :

These are the original Bosh ones, the same product your Indy will get you. Please check whether you can still cancel your order.
