I posed the question to a well respected oil distributor in the UK. I am not sure if this ads to the confusion, but for what it's worth:
Thanks for the mail.
For the Porsche we would recomend either a 5w-40 or 0w-40 full synthetic for all year round use. If the car is still under warrenty then you will need a porsche approved oil, if out of warrenty it does not matter.
Brand wise, have a look at Fuchs, Motul, Mobil and Silkolene.
I thought so. I have seen the approved list (0W-40, 5W-40, 5W-50). I continue to use 0W-40 in my current car until and unless the Porsche issues an update and revision. I respect the dissenting views, but that's my personal choice.
PLEASE NOTE: it is not my intension to re-ignite the flame war. I just had a simple question that was addressed satsifactorily. Thanks again.
Tim
Is that German Beer?!
I think I started the last thread on this...settled on Mobile 0W40 and took the variocam agrument as my reasoning. Still use Mobile 15W50 in the 964.
My opinion...0w40 or 5w40 are sooo close I'd use whichever one is easier. Now I'm on the zinc and phosphorous arguement.
Oh...will it ever end???
