Default Air Intake

I've read most of the threads I could find on this subject and still trying to decide if I want to fork out the $300-600 for a CAI. It sounds like the jury's out on any noticable performance upgrade, but everyone seems to agree the sounds is improved.
I have a friend with a 993 who swears he got the same affect by drilling a hole in the airbox...especially the sound improvement.
My question is, is this possible on my NA '99 996? I mean, first is it possible to do w/o damage and 2nd, will it give the desired sound improvement? Other than checking/replacing my air filter more frequently, what would be the additional needed maintance?

Pat,

Not sure about the 99, but the bottom of my 02 filter box already has holes pre drilled from the factory. So beside from the intake channel coming from the lid, air is also drawn from the bottom of the box through those holes.

Now this would be debatable... But I live near RPM motors who raced your Model Year 996 in both Grand Am and Rolex 24 hours. Lutzo, their Chief Mechanic is a good friend of mine, and he said, through his testing, while the car on dyno, unless you're chipping.. they could barely wring 5HP trying different intake / air filter configurations.

(On a different note... K&N)Hope you heard by now the nighmare some folks went through with the K&N filters fouling the MAF from the oil that they spray on the fliter element.

For better sound (sound only) I replaced the stock plastic intake channel from the box to the MAF, thus eliminating that "Y" connection to the small muffling box. Capped that with plastic cover that came with the kit. Pix attached. This kit was actually just given to me.. I wouldn't buy it for the stock is just as great.

Good luck

Mike

Good luck.

the trouble is, i don't know of anyone with the $ to dyno this sucker in a wind tunnel if they even have that sort of thing outside of Ferrari and Toyota

so dynoing intakes at your local speed shop is pretty tough to measure since you can't dyno w/ car moving

with all that said, the sound is insane with the EVOMS intake. It's not noticealbe at all until you go WOT and at the upper reaches of the RPM band, it's a pretty slick howling noise.

I would not say the jury is still out. I went from 270.1 rwhp to 292.1 rwhp on Dynojet 248C with just a pair of Fabspeed mufflers and a K&N 63-series intake. Sorry, I never dynoed each separately. The only thing that is a definite sound improvement, but not a performance improvement is the PSE.

I just installed the Schnell CAI over the weekend and I have a TIP car and could tell the throttle response was better. It also made the exhaust note a little deeper.
PS Mike, I dont think you are supposed to put the hose clamp over the red block off cap because if it backfires it has no place to release the pressure? Someone correct me if I am wrong.
Here is my install:
I just installed my Schnell CAI and added a K&N filter for the box. Here is what you do if you have a TIP car. Go to Pep Boys and buy a Spectre Breather Filter Part # 3992 Fits 8-12mm tubes ($10.00). Install it into the TIP hose and use the clamp provided. Buy some Zip ties to tie down the loose hose and it works great! I could tell a difference in throttle response and the sound was deeper. My MK II mufflers will be put on Monday.
Here are pics of the install:

Not really. that muffle box it's covering is enclosed. No source of pressure. Or in other words, I still have the muffle box enclosure in there. The neck of it is where that cap sits. as you see in this pix below...

Thanks. Someone told me not to clamp it down because of a backfire it would blow off and allow pressure to escape.

the K&N again.......*sigh*
There are "some" that haven't experienced any issues with the K&N intake...except better sound and more power....

Have an EVO motorsports CAI on the 40th Anniv. The sound is improved and certainly makes more of symphonic howl at 5k and beyond! For power increase EVO states a 6-8hp gain. It is hard to tell personally since the last 996 I drove did not have the X-51 engine package or a CAI. For the money I would put it towards something else, but this car came with it already. Functional and well designed though.

Backfire? If it needs to release pressure, IF, then it will go back out underneath the airbox. That small cap just covers the muffler part of the intake since unfiltered air goes through there if you left it open.

Hi,
I have just install the K&N CAI, but I change the filter to a Hurricane stainless steel cone filter. Great improvement in performance & sound.

That's an EVO? Is it an early model?

Why did you change the filter?
