I have an '02 C4S with the Bose system. There are subs behind each rear seat, built in behind the seat backs. If you have the rear seats down, you can see the air holes for each sub. They actually sound fantastic. This is the first car I've owned where I need to turn the bass down (there is also a "loud" button in the radio options which is great for low level volume).
Not sure how those puppies are buried in there, but they are a fantastic spot and will not take away from any room in the car. Plus, they look awesome when they are exposed.
