Burning my clutch

So I was coming out of the parking garage today (undergound) and got behind a couple cars. The garage exit is onto a main road. Well they have a traffic cop there today and he's not letting the garage folks exit - he's just waiving the cross traffic by.
Me, like a retard, well I didn't brake on the incline. Instead I'm riding the clutch to stay in one spot. Well this works for the 3 seconds I normally wait. But today it was like a minute. So I start to see some smoke, which I assume is from the clutch burning.
When I exit the building (finally) the clutch pedal is complete mush. In fact the pedal stayed at about 1/2 depressed for a good 10 seconds on its own before springing back. At that moment I thought I caught the bittersweet smell of $800 evaporating.
Well, after letting the car sit for a couple hours, I was brave enough to get back in it - and it feels fine. There is no problem getting into or out of gear, and no slipping. Even the pedal feels normal.
I didn't burn the clutch out (this time) - but I must have taken 10,000 miles off its life.

I let my wife drive my 6-speed a few days ago. She's an experienced stick shift driver, but never on a car with any power to speak of. I swear to god, she rev'd up before every shift, and eased the clutch out to maximize the burn. Oh dear god.
I'll never let her drive the car again unless I'm medically incapacitated.

Did you just say hoe garden ?? Interesting neighborhood you live in !!
Anyway, like you now know, use the brakes ! In fact, I've even stopped downshifting -> release clutch -> downshift again (6->5->4->3->2->1->N) when I come to a halt at traffic lights. Why use the clutch to reduce speed when we have brilliant brakes meant to do just that !
Plus its cheaper to replace the brakes than the clutch.
Of course, on the twisties, I do use engine braking, its the fun way. But there the clutch is always engaged (vs engage-> take load -> disengage -> downshift -> repeat), so there is less wear and tear. Of course it will eventually wear out, but why not let it serve you all the fun before killing it off
