Default DE Tech Inspection - Found RMS Seepage

Hi Guys,

I just had my car checked for an upcoming DE event (my first) at Pacific Raceways in 3 weeks. Anyhow, when the car was up on the lift, the technician noted that I have (in his words) "Minor minor RMS seepage - not a leak!"

Does that mean that the 'writing is on the wall', and it's only a question of time before I'm due for RMS replacement, or can the seal continue to seep 'minorly' for a lengthy period of time?

Cheers
Olaf

Olaf - I have heard of very few RMS that actually leak. Many of them seep and do not drip oil on the garage floor. A few here have posted that they didn’t change out the RMS until they needed a new clutch and replaced it at that time.

I don't recall the model year of your car, so I don't know if you have any warranty left on your car or not. If it is under warranty, get Porsche to replace it. If not, you have a choice to make 1) replace it on your nickel or 2) wait until you need a new clutch and replace it then. The RMS seal itself is only about $70. It is the labor to drop the engine that is costly, $700+ for that, IIRC.

The dealer, under warranty, replaced the RMS on my 2004 C2 earlier this year. Maybe others will chime in here and give you their experiences.

OK, then it sounds like I'm good for now (my car is '02, no warranty left), however there are NO marks on the garage floor so it's not too serious.

thanks for the great advice Tim about bundling it with any other repairs in that area when the time comes.

You're welcome! Just make sure you keep an eye on the oil level. Remember, I said MOST RMS don't leak. There have been a few exceptions, but even those don't gush out. It is more like a very slow drip.
