Question Cab top not working, hand brake dash light not on

Hi,

Hopefully the Subj: says it all. I have a friend (yes, it's really not me...) that has a 2002 Cab and the top is stuck down. With the key in the ignition, the dash light for "PARK" does not light up. I seem to remember a thread relating this to a bad fuse, which fuse I don't remember nor if that was ultimately the fix.

I tried the site Search functionality but whenever I enter any search items, it searches for a little while and then just returns a blank page.

Anyone able to point me at the right thread or otherwise tell me how to help my friend fix his cab?

Thanks!

Joe,

This happened to me last summer. Try using the key in the door to raise the top. If the p-brake light is not on, and the top goes up, it is probably the switch. It's an easy and cheap fix.

I hope this helps!

If park isn't lighting up on the dash when the hand brake is pulled up then you need a switch. In a pinch you can sometimes get the switch to come back to life if you pull up and down on the hand brake a bunch of times while holding the button in. After a few seconds of this sometimes park will light up and you'll be able to get the top up.

There is a copper contact on the back of the brake handle that comes in contact with a copper contact on the base of the brake handle when u pull it up. The contact looks like a flat peice of copper. Its only held in a plastic channel in the brake hand assembly by press fitting. Over time it can work its way out. With out the parking brake on the car thinks ur moving and won't operate the top. This is real easy 15 minute fix. You have to take out the center consol so u have access to the parking brake assembly. You'll see the contacts at the back of the assembly. Sometime u can just push the copper contact back in place. Sometimes you have to take it apart to get the contacts back in. Put a dab of crasy glue under the contact and it won't work its way out again.

Make sure the engine lid is closed properly. The top will not operate if engine compartment unlocked.

Jeff: I've passed along your suggestion. I had forgotten that the key in the door can actually operate the top (Anyone remember the VW commercial where the guy shows his girl how the windows can go up/down with the key in the lock? She was not impressed. Nor was my wife when I showed her the top operation )

PTEC: I will pass this suggestion along also, thanks!

Chris996: I remembered this one ('cause it happened to me once) and he's tried that one already but thanks for the reminder.

99firehawk: So that I may avoid popping off , where is the little white switch you refer to? Please be as literal as possible in your description.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Brad, I'll pass this along. If I get time over the long weekend, I'm going to stop by to take a look at his car myself. I don't believe my friend is the most mechanically inclined...

I have the SmartTop installed. I love it. I hated sitting there holding the button down looking like a dork in my cool car...

I have to ask why you ask? Will the SmartTop insulate me from the above mentioned failures?

[BTW, problem is with a friend's 2002 Cab and not my 2000 Cab]

Anyone have the part # for the little white switch? A pic or diagram would be awesome too. ;-)

Many thanks!

yes. SmartTop will hide this problem.
because SmartTop is basiclly a simulator which fools the ECU to think the car is parked and parking switch
