Default 996 Differential gears-anyone changed them?

I'd like some other experiences with these little buggers? Any out there?

Good luck!

I toyed with it after blowing up my gearbox but the gear sets were $900 each....... way too much money.

We have seen several differential (spider) gear sets become pitted which seems unusual, wondering if any others have had this scenerio?

Pitted spider gears are probably from lousy mfg tolerances / finish. They seem to make these rougher and sloppier than the ring and pinion. Rough finish means smaller point contact areas which = higher contact stresses. Have you ever put dye on the spiders and turned the rear? You'd probably have to take some posi clutch out to enable turning it on the bench. If you show very low contact from crummy finish, you may benefit from a REM polish or Micronite or similar. A lot of pro stock racers are doing one or the other of these to R&P sets now. Big results. If it's not a finish problem, then it could be heat treat. A self-defense for that would be a cryo treatment, bu tI'm betting it's the lousy finish.

I dont have anything to shed on the subject other than my diff has howled bad since I got the car with 55k miles, seems unusual for a factory car and a car held at such high standards.

The other thing is Porsche pieces are so darn expensive, I could get diff gears for a Ford 9-inch for like a $130 a set, you cant even buy a tooth for a Porsche diff gear for that. (slightly exagerating)

Powerhaus II?
