had my car in (at my mechanic not P dealer) yesterday for it's 30K service - he found that I have the dreaded RMS! I know it's not a huge deal, fortunately the car is CPO - '02 Targa - my mechanic also said my clutch looks like it's "not right" his words, not mine - although it seems fine to me. I'm scheduled to take it to the dealer on Monday for a look at the seal. Advice from anyone who's dealt with this before? Do I ask them about the clutch? Since the car only has 28K on it, I hate to replace it this early, but is it worthwhile to do it now instead of waiting? My Boxster has 80K on it, and clutch is still fine - assuming the 996 goes this long as well, I probably won't even have it at that point, since lease is up at 60K. Thanks in advance for your help.
I had my RMS go about 2 years ago at around 40,000 miles. Yes pick up the clutch from Suncoast or some other dealer (ie save yourself some money) and take it with you and have them replace it while they are in there. Since your warranty will pick up the RMS this will be the cheapest clutch replacement one could dream of and should then last you out to 70,000+ miles. Oh by the way again 2 years later and no leaks off of the new parts.
Had my RMS done in December under warranty and I was prepared to replace the clutch too if needed (car had 34K miles). Dealer said that there would be no labor charges for the clutch since it has to come off anyway to get at the seals (have them do the IMS as well; they usually do). They didn't care if I bought the clutch kit from them or someone else. In the end, the old clutch went back in since it still had 70% life left.
Ask him what "not right" means. Does he mean it's worn out or does he mean it's damaged somehow? Like the guys above, I had my RMS replaced at 30K miles and had the clutch replaced for no labor cost. If your clutch is damaged somehow maybe warranty would replace it for you. It seems like it's worth asking.
I don't think the mechanic "saw" the clutch - I think he meant it felt funny to him - to me, it doesn't seem to have changed during the whole time I've had it.
im sure it feels funny they always feel fun ny as they get old, as long as they clean and grease every thing when they do the rms (providing the clutch is still ok) it feel way diffrent
