Default New throw out bearing - replace the clutch?

So, with just 16K on the car the clutch started making weird noises yesterday when it was depressed. Took it in today and they said that the throw out bearing needs replacing - which means dropping out the tranny and therefore 10-11 hours work. All under warranty - phew!

They are suggesting I get a new clutch as the labor is effectively free - cost to me is $750 in parts.

I'm torn - on the one hand I can't understand why I'd replace the clutch after just 16K miles. On the other hand, if the labor is free, maybe it's best to do it.

I'd swap the disc only. That can't be more than $150 or so. Doubtful the flywheel or pressure plate would benefit from being swapped.

well that part is warranty, so I don't care that much. If I do the clutch they are telling me 1 hr + parts is my problem.....

ok, well difficult to explain on a forum, but i will give it a go.

Only time there was any noise was when i depressed the clutch. At idle, or in gear there is no noise. Changing gear is no issue. Clutch is not soft.

When I depress the clutch there is quite a lot of clicking/chatting/vibrating going on while not moving. The noise is coming from under the car towards the rear. The clutch itself has started to squeak as I push it in.

While driving, when I change gear I can hear a something spinning as I depress the clutch. The faster I'm moving, the faster the spinning noise. I believe this is the throw out bearing (tho I'm way past my mechanical knowledge at this time!)

You can buy the Sachs OE clutch kit which includes brand new, not reman, Disc, PP, and T/O brng for less than $400. Labor SHOULD be 3-4hrs max., many experienced techs can di it in 2.5hrs.

My clucth was replaced at 48k miles when the motor was out, I had already bought the parts and had them installed at no additional charge, as tech told me just a few minutes to put these in. My original was less than 50% worn.

Clutch wear is not mileage specific, but determined by number of disengagements and engagements and the amount of slipping and how power is applied. Every case is different.

well the service manager had it diagnosed in 5 seconds before the car was even parked in the bay, so he seemed pretty confident that's what it was.....
