Default Oil!

I know that oil is a touchy subject and I normally stay well away from it, but I came across this link at another forum and I thought that it might interest some here - I hope it hasn't already been posted.

I read the first couple of paragrahps and found this:

"Detergent oils contain dispersants, friction modifiers, anti-foam, anti-corrosion, and anti-wear additives. These detergents carry away contaminants such as wear particulates and neutralize acids that are formed by combustion byproducts and the natural breakdown of oil. "

The additives he refers to are not necessarily contained in DETERGENT oils, yet most of them do. Non detergent oils may have these additives as well. Detergents only carry away contaminants when the oil is removed or drained from the motor as detergents hold contaminants in suspension. Detergents do not neutralize acids, calcium carbonate compounds do and have nothing in common with detergents. Acids are not formed by the combustion byproducts and the natural breakdown of oil.

I think the author needs to have a better understanding of the subject he is writing about. Anyway to keep my interest beyond the first few sentences. I hope it gets better.

Nice thanks! These sort of things don't normally make it to my radar screen, as I basically let the dealer do whatever Porsche recommends, but this one might be worth watching more closely if the trend continues.

I know - I didn't want to do it, but I thought that the article was interesting. I normally try to stay away from this subject entirely, but I figured that it was worth throwing out there to get comments.

Hmmm - I was going to make a new post asking what the first oil change on my soon to be delivered 996 should consist of, but given the tone of this thread maybe I'll do a whole lot of searching first.

That said....what's the general consensus for a northern west coast climate? Is it true I only *need* to change my oil wvery 10,000 kilometres?

What about transmission fluid? Brake fluid?

Thanks

I change mine by the manufacturers recommendations (15000 miles), and have the drain oil analyzed at a lab every time. So far the oil is fine, and wear is well within design tolerances. Vancouver is much like the Bay area, so I would recommend the same change interval for you.

Is 15000 miles really the recomended interval ?!? seems kind of long. What actual oil do you use?

Thanks - actually I am going to post a seperate thread ?

I use Mobil1 0-40.

Interesting enough, for the 997, which has essentially the same engine, the oil change interval is 20,000 miles.
