Default 996 water pump replacement procedure

Hi guys,

The water pump went bad on my 996 C4, 70k miles. Bearing shot, pulley wiggles and signs of coolant leaks from the bearing.

Bought a new pump and gasket and installed it this weekend.

Here is the link to the DIY article.

Wow, great job! Nice detailed pics and instructions. Thank you!

Now, the question remains...do I have the guts to do it myself when mine needs replacing...

Awesome instructions.!!! Aren't there "two" bolts longer than the others, I seem to recall having problems determining where they went.

I did have two "longer" 10mm bolts, but I think one of the goes on the engine carrier... So only left with one bolt, which I believe went into the left upper side of the water pump perfectly.

Cool

I just had mine replaced last thursday on my 996 C4 (-99) after 70700km. Broke down on the highway, made a lot of noice....
Bearing completely broken, turbine wheels on waterpump damaged and fallen into cooling system.
Tow truck to the closest dealer and they fixed it directly (had a pump on stock, and squeeze me in between other cars, Great service!), after a few hours I was on my way again with a new water pump.

Insult to injury / Murphy's law....

How long does water pump replacement take? I will be attempting this DIY over the weekend.

On the way home from the my dealer (approx. 2.5 hours one direction) I had the bearing / seal go out. Initially squealing followed by clunking, and finally water loss. At least I was about a mile from the house.....
