I'm back in the market to join the Porsche ranks. However, last time I was looking at a 993 C4 and I was just bit too tall. Since last Spring, prices for 2001 & 2002 996s have come down to where I could consider one. I'm looking to spend around 35K, maybe a little more if it's worth it.

I have found 2 cars that I want to take a closer look at.
- 2001 w/ 46K miles and the GT3 aero kit
- 2002 (mileage unknown yet)

The 2001 look GORGEOUS and is a couple grand cheaper, but I hear that the 2002 is a better car because of the variocam, meaning +20hp, broader powerband, driveability, fuel economy, and better response to ECU upgrades.

I will be doing some research on this, but thought that some of you would share some thoughts on the subject.

When I changed my exhaust 10 days ago on my '00 Cab, I saw that it says VARIOCAM on the engine block of the 3.4L; if you check the ECU tuner pages (e.g. GIAC), then you'll also see that the 3.4L engine seams to response better to ECU "upgrades" than the 3.6L engine, so I'm not sure that you heard the right things.

 

Not sure about the ECU upgrades but the 2002 was a pretty big leap from the 2001. Stiffer chassis, more power, better aero, etc. etc.
