Default Thoughts on the new generation of street tires

Gentlemen:

Very popular topic here (I'm glad to see!)! I'm soliciting for opinions on the two tires I've boiled my search down to, which are the new RE050a Pole Position and the Advan Sport. I realize the PS2 is the tire of choice around here, but I have a 996 C2 Cab w/18's, which will not accept a 295 and I don't want to cut back to 265's. Am currently running the Conti 2's, 225's in front, 285's rear. I was pretty well set to order the Yoko's (a company who's tires I've had GREAT success with over the years on a wide variety of vehicles) the other day, when I read a ton of raves on the Rack review board on the new Pole Position. Which is a freakin' steal, if it's as good as everybody is saying. Now, mind you, I won't make a decision on price alone, but a deal is a deal!

Anyway, the car is a near daily 3 season driver for me, is never tracked and stored in a non heated garage. So, the Neova's, and the like, are out of the question, since the rubber compund can never see sub 40 degrees. I don't take her out if it's already raining, or threatening, when I leave. But, rain performance is at least a small factor, since this is pretty much my daily driver and I do get caught in the rain from time to time. Especially at risk during weekend trips, you understand.

Thoughts, comments, opinions, musings welcomed, even encouraged!

My thanks in advance,
Mario (ix ix vi)

Mario - I don't usderstand why you think 295 won't fit on your car. I have an '04 C2 with stock OEM suspension and I just put PS2 tires on my car. I have 18" wheels with 8" wide and 50m offset in the front and 10" wide and 65mm on the rear. I have 235/40/18 on the front and 295/30/18 on the rear and I have no rubbing issues with these tires. FYI.

mario,

it's funny, your driving patterns with the 911 are *exactly* like mine I too need new tires and have conti 2's which I don't like and won't replace. On my old boxster I had changed the conti tires (1's I believe) to Yoko AVS sports and was very happy with those. I'm also looking at the RE050 or a newer Yoko. Hopefully I can find a good tire place in the dc/maryland suburbs area and I might by depending on what they stock.

Did you take a look at Toyo Proxes T1r tires? They come in a 285/30 rear and the prices are very reasonable. I currently have P Rossas and I'm looking at getting the T1R as replacements. Do a search here and you'll get some of the feedback on the tires.

Try "Radial Tire" in Downtown Silver Spring. They've been around for >30 yrs and are the most knowledgable & well stocked shop around + prices are unbeatable. Best of all they really know Porsches.
Be prepared to wait a while though as they handle about 300+ cars a day.
Incredible operation.

The Neova's cannot be in temps below 15 degrees is what I read. BTW, I have a set on my 996.

I love this forum!!!

gota911 - Service/parts specialist at my local dealer told me the larger size would only fit a wide body, like TT and C4. I've also read some mixed things about putting the 295's on 10" wheels, rather than 11's. So, I have been proceeding under the assumption that I had to stick with 225's and 285's. You REALLY just threw a wrench in the gears! I have World Cup wheels (the 5 spoke stars) from an '02(3,4) on my car. They are 8" and 10", and I believe the offset is 50 and 65, but I'll have to double check to make sure. How do the larger tires feel on your C2? Wow, talk about shedding new light on a situation...

potxli - I had AVS Sports on my 300ZX TT some years ago and LOVED 'EM! Since, I've had AVS db's on two cars, have Geolander's on my Mountaineer and have had one of my sister's and at least one friend go to Yoko's and been as pleased as I. I got like a kid on Christmas Eve when I started reading about the ADVAN Sport and saw that they are OEM on the Bentley GT and the 997. But, I've only heard from one guy who is actually using them. He switched from Rosso's, and prefers the Yoko's, but one opinion does not a swayed decision make. Of course, there is the issue of N ratings, which I am a believer of, but gota911's input changes the whole formula.

wlee69 - I had the Proxes T1r on my original list and dismissed them, along with several others, because most input led me to sumize that any increase in dry traction came at too great a cost in wet traction. Also, being that this is a daily driver and summer weekend road warrior, road noise and ride comfort do get a small input into the tire equation.

kolshak - You've got me thinking I should be driving to DC for tires! Beautiful car, BTW. Ocean or Lapis? My Cab is Ocean w/ Savanna. Man, do I like this combination!

w-dc-p - Thanks for clarifying, I thought I had read 40. None the less, around here, winters see sub zero, which I understand destroys the rubber compound.

Anybody go from PS2's to either 050a PP's or ADVAN Sports who could share their take on the switch?

Keep it comin', guys!

295 tires are meant for rims from 10.5" to 11.5". While they may fit on a 10" rim, it's not ideal. Without other modifications it may also result in some more understeer.

The "upsized" tires make the car feel a little more planted. Since I upsized both the front and the rear by +10mm each, the understeer has remained about the same as with 225 front & 285 rear.

just checked out tirevan and I really like the fact they come install to your home. However, the only tires they have for the C4S are the Yoko AVS Sports (don't want the neova due to the temperature issue). I liked them on my boxster 4 years ago, but they are an older design and I'm wondering whether I should get them again. Any one running the AVS sports on a 996? Thoughts?

Tim, not sure how you got 295's on your rear with a 10" rim but if they fit you did yourself NO favors. The contact patch with the 295 is absolutely NOT larger than the 285 and in fact might be a bit smaller b/c of the tire stretching you have done in that rim. The largest size you should run on the 10" rim is a 285.

Mario, your service center is feeding you crap. The narrow/wide body is NOT what dictates what size tire you can run now what size wheel you can run! What you need to be concerned with is the offset of the wheel. It is the offset that adjust the wheel "in" or "out" to compensate for changes of fender location based on wheel carrier position.

FYI.....I run 315/30/18's in the rear of my GT3 and it is........drum roll please...........A NARROW BODY!

Thumbs up Mich Pilot Sport Rib

Mario,

Have you looked into the Mich Pilot Sport Rib. You can get those in 285s for the rear. They're N rated and the correct size as the manual ask for. They are all I use. Great for the street and track. Lots of grip and quiet.

If you call Tirevan and tell them that tirerack.com has the tires you want they will order them for you at that same price plus maybe shipping.
