New Owner
I recently bought a 2000 996, bone stock, ocean blue, gray interior with 85K on the clock. Having owned two 95 Audi S6's in the last 8 years, this was the natural progression (yup, baby seats fit in the back)
After some wrangling with the seller and a tragic incident involving the vario tensioner, I now have a brand new factory motor with all new components (plus 2 year warranty).
Apparently the PO sprayed armorall into the instrument cluster, which made its way onto the inside of the plexi glass on the volt and oil pressure gauges. I have removed the entire cluser, but am afraid to pry the half moon rings off to remove and clean the glass. Any ideas?
Thanks
Stefan

Stefan - welcome to Rennlist and COngrats on getting a nice looking P-car. Oh, wait.... there are no pics.... so I THINK it is a nice looking P-car. (hint hint)
Sorry, but I can't help with the instrument cluster question. I know that a few guys here have changed the gauge faces and will be willing to give you some hints.
Again, welcome!

What was the tragic incident involving the vario tensioner. How did you find out? Glad to see it all worked out

Thank you for the link - this should make the job easier.
As to the engine, I got a CEL which was diagnoses as the right bank tensioner (apparently not unusual for higher mileage 996s, and very expensive) . After the engine was dropped and a dozen or so other leaks and annoyances were fixed (plus clutch etc), everthing was indexed to a crank pulley that had been installed incorrectly by a prior mechanic (later discovered that the guide pin was missing)- and it grenaded the cylinder head. Long story short, new engine for price of original repair - wife still loves me.

Performed the speedo glass cleaning last night. Very tedious with q-tips, several ultra soft rags, and lots of clear plastic cleaner and polish. Looks much better.
I am having trouble sending pictures. Files are apparently too large.

Thanks for the resizing link. Here are two pictures from when I picked up the car in December. Due to winter and the car being out of comission for 6 weeks, I have not had the chance to do a full detail. I do, however love the color. If intereseted, I can send some pics of the engine carnage
