I know some guys that received checks from the state of Hawaii or the county of Honolulu for road damage, but it took quite a while.

The tire may appear OK, just have it inspected insuring it isnt bruised. Check eBay for a replacement wheel.

Sorry to see this! Hope all is well in short time!

Regarding the tow truck.... I was worried I damaged the suspension so didnt want to risk driving on the spare... I was definitely overcautious since it was my first ever pothole experience.

However - if this happens again, I am def going to change the tire. No way am I going through the tow truck deal again... sucks.

RCG, I can't believe that you even hit a pothole that big? Wow, it must have popped out of nowhere. My father actually ran over a cinder block in the middle of the FDR one night and damage the oil pan on one of his older Porsches. Your misfortune definitely reminds me to ALWAYS be on the lookout when driving around the city. Frankly, even when the roads aren't riddled with potholes, as they are in the winter, New York City roads are always in terrible condition. It's a wonder on what this city actually spends its money. Anyway, sorry to hear about your wheel. Hopefully you can find a replacement on the cheap. (Ebay I guess)

UPDATE: Try this link to file a claim with the NYC comptroller this trial lawyers pothole protection site (go figure) has tons of good information.

The more i think about it - the less I think it was a pothole.... must of been a rock or chunk of concrete or something... strange, if it was a big pothole would of broken the tire too..or done something else, but the damage is just on outer portion of rim.
