My mechanic, using clever wireless microphones, has isolated a loud and irritating vibration coming form the area of a "rod' THAT GOES ACROSS THE BASE OF THE CAR FROMPAR

There is a heavy hollow tube which runs from side to side under the floor of my 01 996 tt. It seems to be involved in a serious vibration -rattle, especially on the brick streets where I live. This tube is located anterior to the rear wheel well and can just barely be seen when the wheel well liner and access plate in the forward upper wheel well is removed. It is over the jacking point and under the rear side speaker. The seat belt retractor is right there, too. It looks like a torsion bar or some substantial componet of the structure of the frame.
Has anyone had this noise?...very difficult to locate. My mechanic used a few cordless microphones pick-ups. The vibration was equal volume both end of the tube, so it apears to be the tube it self conducting the vibe.
Is anyone familiar with the anatomy of the 996 in this area? Getting to the tube without major surgery seems difficult to say the least.
Any and all suggestions appreciated.

theres a bulletion on that noise, usually requires the floor cut open the the bar welded down. sometimes you can bend away the metal touchig the tube at each end where it gos through

Holy crap! Couldn't you just stuff some paper towels in there to keep the metal from hitting? Cutting the floor open seems a bit like, hmmm, I dunno, damn, words escape me.
Good thing it's not a design flaw. Porsches don't have design flaws. Obviously operator error.

99Firehawk...OH No
I was afraid of something like that.
Do you have any information on that bulletin? Where would I find it? Does the dealer have it?
Thanks all.
BTW it would take a proctologist's endoscope to get in there to take a photo.

try having someone else drive down a bumpy road while u use a pry bar to apply pressure to the bar in each direction, when you silance it, bend the sheet metal away from the tube where it goes in to the outer wall, i have had a 90% suces rate in doing this, welding it works too

Again, thanks
I found a TSB regarding 01 996 turbos."Interior-Noises in the rear seat well"
What Firehawk99 and this TSB suggest is that this reinforcing rod is accessible from the interior of the car. Good news.
I only had reached it through the wheel well access panel. Major PITA
The next step will be to go through the interior to the exposed ends of this rod and try Firehawk99's gentle persuasion or the TSB recommendation of felt tape. No mention of cutting floors or welding. That may be another TSB.
Can't check it out this weekend as car is in the alignment shop.
