Default Best Intake, Header, Exhaust, Chip combination

Hello All - I have a 2002 996 that's currently completely stock. I'm looking to get a little extra performance. Ideally would like to get close to 997 Carrera S performance. I figure doing the combination of Intake, Headers, Exhaust and Chip might do the trick. Any thoughts? What seems to work well together. I noticed that Fabspeed sells a kit with everything except the chip. Thanks in advance for your replies.

Waste of money IMO. Unless you bore out the motor to 3.8, it ain't gonna happen. A lot of the mods you mentioned may actually LOSE you power.

Get some aftermarket mufflers (for a better exhaust note) and enjoy the car as is.

If the money is burning a hole in your pocket, do some suspension mods to get rid of the Cayenne ride height.

factory intake, headers, DME. The only thing that I would change is the exhaust (as Holger stated) to get a mroe agressive note if that is what you are after. I added PSE to my CAB and it is the most incredible sound!

You might also consider a supercharger - lots of threads discussing that already if you do a search. Expensive but it will get you to turbo performance.

Thanks guys. I think I'll stick with it as is ..... maybe add an exhaust.

Given my car is completely stock, as a point of interest check out this picture I of my speedometer a little while ago.

Great post as I am interested if it is really worth the money to do all of this to my 99 w/22k miles.
I think making it sound better is good with a different muffler and suspension to lower and increase cornering performance as well as my SSK B&M is all I will do....heck I want to use it for a trade on a TT in the next year anyway

Default Recommended upgrades

As others have said, there is not a lot that can be done to improve the performance of the engine, but there are a few mods that you can do to make the car sound, handle and feel better.

I would recommend the following:

Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE). $1200 -$2500 (parts vs parts + installation) No HP gain, but sure makes the car sound better.

M030 ROW sport suspension upgrade. $1200 -$2500 (parts vs parts + installation) The ROW (rest of world) M030 sport suspension setup is the reference design for this car. Every other stock suspension setup is a compromise derivative of this setup. This will transform your car's handling, and make it faster in the corners.

Short Shifter Kit SSK $200-700 (depending on source and if you install it or someone else. A SSK will change the shifting of the car from using a mystery shifter into a bolt action lever. There are versions available from 3rd parties or from Porsche.

All of the other mods out there like cold air intakes etc, are just a waste of time and money, and will usually degrade performance.

My 2¢

I can agree on the SSK and the suspension but disagree on the CAI. It may not increase the performance by much but it surely doesn't degrade the performance and it positively influences the sound of the engine like the exhaust mod does.

I'd somewhat disagree with the others. I'd bet you could get 10-15 hp out of a headers, chip, intake combo, but every one of those horses will be expensive and you won't get 997S power.

If you really want to get close, the X51 power kit will get you to 345hp (but get out your checkbook). If you go further and add a racing coilover kit you should be able to keep pace with a stock 997S on a road course (although you car will have a compromised street ride).

Good Luck.

Add all those items to your 996 and you'll outrun all of the stock talkers.

Right, another commenter that has little actual experience. Guess what, power can be picked on these cars.........

The pre 02 will pick up lot's of power. The '02's and later are not as lucky but there is still power there to be gained. Intake, headers, chip, exhaust, cats, can all be improved upon.

Yes grasshopper, burn bright, and short.

I may have a stock engine, but I will still wup any smug pretender on any course any time, and still pull 26 mpg.
