I've been warned that the oil from the K&N can ruin your MAF

I don't know (and I doubt that it's true) if K&N filters, properly oiled, will mess up the MAF. What I do know, is that K&N is mostly hype and you shouldn't waste your money on them.

As for when you should change your filter, I suggest that at 16K it's probably a bit early unless you live in a very dusty/dirty environment or you are incredibly ****-retentive. To put your mind at ease, remove the existing filter and look at it. If it looks dirty, replace it. If it looks clean, put it back and drive for another 16K miles, then replace it.

i would just buy the cone filters that dont require oiling and just completely replace them when the time comes.

from all i've read there is no performace gain w/cones.

the engines supposedly sounds nicer though.

Yes MAF is Mass Air Flow sensor.

On Porsche, and other vehicles, there is considerable evidence that the oil from K&N style filters leads to problems with the MAF.

I use Porsche factory when I replace.

I have 30K miles and I am replacing my air filter with a BMC Filter which they use in some the GT Cup cars. They are high quality and I have only heard good things about them. They are supposed to increase the HP a bit, we will see about that though.

Just remember guys, as you get that "claimed" hp bump from the other filters it is b/c you are getting more air through the filter. But with that increased air comes increased non-air pollutants into the engine since the larger "pores" of the free breathing filters allow more through. It's all a trade off, it just depends on what it is worth to you.

15k filter change for me, with factory stock.

Depends on your local driving conditions, but as I drive in CA and AZ, I assume there's going to be a considerable amount of fine sand/dust/ash, hence the filter needs changing more regularly than std.

I also use a vacuum cleaner to suck-up the dust I get in the air box before fitting the new filter.

The factory interval is 30K for an air filter unless the car is used in harsh or extremely dusty environments. I replace at 30K and have never had a problem.

There is no advantage to using the "miracle" air filters, except to lighten your wallet. The aftermarket filters that use oil are well documented about the problems that can be caused with contamination of the MAF.

Sorry, no free HP waiting to be released with a trick air filter.

Agreed! A set of "clear side markers" will give you as many additional HP as the "miracle" air filters will add.

I do not understand I did not feel any HP increase after I put on my clear side markers, what is up with that?
