Default The Good News and the Dreaded News

Take the car in this morning for its 15K service. Good news is that I learned that I am still under full warranty - I thought that ended last year and I was now in CPO but I was a year out

An hour after I leave the dealer I get a call and I recognise the number. Uh oh.

RMS.

I'm told that they are going to fit the Cayenne seal. I thought the general thinking these days is the 997 seal.

I know this is discussed to death and the search I just did didn't really settle my mind. Car is on the lift at this point so not a lot I can do I guess.

Don't worry about it. It's a pretty easy fix and most mechanics have done them before. The RMS issue is very overinflated.

How is this dreaded news? You have a 2003 and it is just now getting it's 15K service? It is probably leaking becasue it hasn't been driven enough to keep the seals from drying out.

So when the seals dry out, that's when it starts to seep? My car was never driven by the previous owner, 02 w/ 12k miles... I suppose I should start driving it or at least get the RMS replaced. 15k is coming up anyway.

Opinions?

The deals will be MORE prone to leaking if they are dried out or didn't seat properly. You'll have your RMS replaced nex time you have either (1) and RMS leak that requires replacement; or (2) replaced when you have a new clutch installed.

Arnee,

Drive it anyway I wouldn't go about replacing it until it needs to be done. My car never needed one until 35k miles, I think. Some cars may never need it.

Looks great, by the way - welcome!

well i have put 5K of that fifteen on it since i got it six months ago and i'm driving it every day...... one off - maybe? could also be the start of a journey to a new engine. two extremes, but who knows.

not something i wanted to contemplate, thats why for me it's dreaded news.

wow, the sensationalism of this RMS leads to a new engine myth has really bit you good.

I was in the same situation. It appears that the new seal seems to work very much better than the one which came on your engine. I was happy to get the new one at Porsche's expense.

Yeah. I also believe it's because it's blown out of proportion. It can be fixed for a relatively low cost; free if within warranty!

For me, I'll just drive it until a new clutch is necessary.

Have you guys heard of GT3 Motorsport Seals being used instead of the factory 996 seals? I read it on RennTech in a post.

I have NEVER heard of a PMNA part being used. Not even sure if the seals match up since they are entirely different motors and transmissions.
