Default HP for 3.4

I had always thought that the 996 3.4 had 296hp until model year 2000 when it then had 300hp but the owners manual from my 2001 996 states that it has 296hp.
Was there, in fact, a change from 1999-2001?

I'm not sure I'd be that concerned about 4 HP no matter which way it goes...

I'm not concerned, I just thought there was a slight change.

The 2000 model naturally aspirated 911s were carried over from '99 except that a new exhaust bumped output to 300 horsepower...so you are correct. Not sure why your manual states 296 hp (maybe a typo from previous years)

296 hp is the SAE conversion from kw. 300 hp is the DIN conversion from kw.
The PET catalog lists the '98-'00 3.4's @ 220kw, the '01 @ 221kw.
1 kw = 1.36 hp DIN
1 kw = 1.34 hp SAE

I thought the 2000 996 also introduced e-gas and this is what bumped up the HP to 300.

e-gas was introduced on the '99 C4.

the 4hp bump, which has been REPORTED by PAG/PCNA is attributable to changes in the exhasut system (mainly) and happened in the 2000 model year (including 01). The 99's have 296hp. But, as most would confirm, that while these HP are verified and reported by PAG/PCNA, there is NO WAY IN HELL you are going to feel the difference between 296 and 300hp.

Jamie,
In your Owners Manual, does it also state the engine power in kw?
Does it state whether the horsepower is SAE or DIN?
In my '99 Owners Manual, on the Technical Data page, the power is listed as:
Net-horsepower, SAE J 1349, 296hp/221kw.

Dell,
What year model is your Cab?
What does your Owners Manual list? SAE or DIN?
What kw rating does your manual show?

Also, Dell, we all know that the GT3 MkII is supposed to be 380 hp.
How is the power listed in your GT3 Owners Manual?

The 996 GT3 PET Catalogue lists the MkII at 280kw, the MkI, 265kw.
280kw = 380hp DIN, 375hp SAE.
265kw = 360hp DIN, 355hp SAE.
Does your GT3 Owners Manual indicate 375hp SAE?

Also, I have seen the 996 Turbo published as both 415hp and 420hp.
The 996 Turbo PET Catalogue lists all year models at 309kw.
309kw= 420.12hp DIN, 414.38hp SAE.

The 996 Turbo PET catalogue also shows the increases in power for the
996 GT2, from the initial
340kw of the '02-'04 models (462hp DIN, 456hp SAE. I've seen both hp #'s published)
to the 360kw of the '05 GT2 (489hp DIN, 482hp SAE).

The bottom line is, both SAE and DIN conversions from kw are published, and many sources do not identify which conversion they are quoting.

Kevin, my CAB is a 2000 and my wife drives it to work so I have no access to the manual. The GT3 manual says:
Net Horsepower SAE J 1349 380hp/280kW at crankcase speed 7400rpm
Net Torque SAE J 1349 285 ft lb/38 Nm at crankcase speed 5000rpm

LOL.
I'm not surprised....
PCNA publishes 0-100kph times for one car, 0-60mph times for the next, and PAG publishes DIN hp (metric) as SAE hp (imperial/international).
The only way to keep published ratings consistent is to do the actual conversion from kw to either DIN or SAE.

FWIW, the conversion factors are:

1 hp SAE (International) = 1.0138697 hp DIN (metric)
1 hp DIN (metric) = 0.9863201 hp SAE (International)
1 hp DIN (metric) = 0.7354988 kW
1 hp SAE (International) = 0.7456999 kW
1 kW = 1.3596216 hp DIN (metric)
1 kW = 1.3410221 hp SAE (International)
