Default How are winter tires different?

Newbee here, I must say my ignorance in this departement is due to geography, living in south florida. But I repeatly see posts refering to winter shoes, tires ect. How are these tires different than those used the rest of the seasons? Is it size, tread, ect..

tread and compund are both different. The tread is generally more agressive and the compound is much softer. If you ever get to feel the difference between a summer and winter tire at 40 degrees and below you will notice that the summer feels like a rock, not very good for traction in those conditions.

No expert here, but winter tires do have different tread, usually narrower and made from rubber compounds that are more ductile in colder weather (hence they flex better). This is all off the top of my head.

Pirelli Snowsport 240. Only ones that have the 295/35/18's for the rear of the wide body TT's and C4S.

Winter tires also have lots of litle sipes in the tread. I'm running Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 on a C4S (265-35/18 on the rear).

are you guys running different rims as well or are you just swapping the rubber?

I really need to get some winter tires as the temperature this morning makes it a bit crazy to be on P-Zeros (around 30 degrees)

running different rims... I use boxster twist 17s. I am also in tri-state area, and like the 17s because 1) tire is cheaper and 2) pothole time!

I run different wheels as well as tires in the winter. It's not for any particular reason other than swapping the summer/winter wheel/tire combination is a lot easier for me to do myself. Besides, it's fun to have a different 'outfit' for the car in winter. As of this past Sunday, I'm back on my sport classics. I know, I know, it's been unusually warm in the northeast, but don't laugh: I swear I read a forecast for some colder Canadian air this week. I won't even get any of you started on lack of snow.
