Default Oil pressure gauge question

Ok, I have question for you 996 gurus.

My oil pressure gauge is normally around 4-5 under hard acceleration. Today I noticed at half throttle the needle is pinned at 5+. Is that normally or should I have it checked out? Oil level is about half a quart low, would that be the reason for the high pressure????

The car has 20k miles and other then a few oil changes I have not done much. Is it overdue for a major/minor service and what would that entail?

Maybe it is time to take it in for the complete service, what does it normally run?

thanks in advance,
peter

Cold engine, any engine speed = 5 bar
Warm engine at idle = 1.5 - 2 bar
Warm engine above 3000 rpm = 4.5+ bar

thats odd, the car was up to operating temperatures. I normally dont get aggressive until it has warmed up 15-20 mins.

So being pinned at 5 bar is normal?

The coolant was at operating temperature, oil may take a bit longer on a cold day.
Did the pressure drop at lower RPM's? Likely normal

Oh dear God... Could anyone in the southern Connecticut area stop by my house and put a bullet in my head before this gets started?

yeah the pressure does drop at low rpms or at idle. i'm using the 0w40 like most.

I think you are right about the coolant being up to par before the oil gets warm.

thanks guys.

So is there even a 20k service, and what does it entail?

Since I don't do the maximum recommended mileage (20,000km or 15,000? miles) per year before service is required, my car is serviced annually and they alternate with "major" and "minor" service (I think this is specified in the service manual). Additionally they take care of special items, for example gear box oil, spark plugs etc and this is done at or before the recommended mileage is reached.

i dont have a porsche, but in my 300zx and 500sl the oil pressure goes up as acceleration goes up.

why is your car a 1/2 low in oil?

routine maintenance can probably be done by you. change oil, change air filters, change air cabin filter, check tire thread and pressure, maybe even change your plugs.

if your pressure continues low i would suspect a bad oil pressure sending unit, easily replaced in most cars. i dont know about ps.

Oil is about 1/4 to 1/2 quart low, i'll top it off tonight.
The oil pressure is reading on the high side according to the gauge.

I had the same problem, replaced the oil pressure sensor.
