A $300 alignment is worth it like a $150 (Labor) oil change. It's all about the mistique and preceived value.
I long time indy alignment and suspension shop in Salt Lake City has done all my cars from twin I beam Ford trucks, which BTW the factory says they can't have the caster changed because there is no adjustment (these guys bend the I beams) to Jags, Porsches and others, some with modified suspensions. They charge less than $60.00 for a 4 wheel alignment and do it in just under an hour.
I have aligned a few of my cars myself and it is time consuming doing it in the driveway with rudimentry tools. I think it would be a snap on a rack with the proper measuring tools. Really quite simple and not rocket science. Once you understand it you also understand that the factory specs are a one size fits all and they may not be the absolute best for your car and driving techniques.

There are 2 dealerships here in Atlanta, Jim Ellis charges $180, Hennessy charges $450 as they charge by the hour and they say it'll take 4 hours to do an alignment. What a ripoff!
