That'll do it. 15 isn't even close. You want a "perfect" reading? Wait and check first thing in the morning before you start her up.

I recently picked up my car from the dealer to fix a leak coming from the valve cover gasket(I believe) and they overfilled my oil level. So I took Dell's advice and removed the oil filter cap and dumped that. I also had to buy the oil filter wrench and the photo helped me find the correct one. Thanks Dell and Rennlist for the help.

Regarding the oil filter wrench, you can by one like in the photo dell posted, or you can pick up a cheaper version (i.e., lower quality) for a couple bucks at your local autozone/checker. If I recall correctly, there were 3 or 4 different sizes that looked they could work, and I bought them all to see which one fit, and returned the others. When I get home tonight I'll check the size and report back. You have to be careful about getting the right size becuase some of the wrenches are very close, but not perfect, and can thus slip and potentially round off or otherwise damage the ribs on the filter cartridge.

Default I'd like to second the cheaper, easier to get version

I use a FloTool SuperGraphite oil filter socket wrench on all of my cars. I have 3 or 4 of them for the different sizes of filters. The wrench is made out of exactly the same stuff as the Porsche oil filter canister is made of.

The correct one for the 996/986/997/987 is the #7 and is about $4 at any auto parts store. It is 74mm with 14 flutes.

I have been using these wrenches for years with no problems.

Also let me comment that the best time to get the most accurate oil level reading is after the car has set overnight.

It's a non-issue, really. It'll just burn off, no need to fret over it.

Actually it is.

Easier than taking 5 minutes to remove the oil filter cover and dump out the oil collected in it? Or a bit longer than 5 minutes to do it a few times over driving it overfilled and risk potential damage? It's NOT good to run that car with it overfilled.

Burning it off is the best way to do it if you don't like to take care of your car properly
