You might check under the hood of your trunk. My radio code was written on the paint label sticker located on the underside of the hood....

Hope this helps.

Yes, you can get a battery to fit your 996 at auto parts stores. Sears has one also.

Mine doesn't require a code. When did they stop using them?

Perhaps with the MOST change? My 03 does not have one.

Personally, I can't imagine anyone really wanting to steal one of these.

exactly. IIRC, the 2002model year was the last of the non-MOST radios which would explain the code Gant needs.

Gant, I replaced mine this summer and bought a Bosch Premium Gold battery - it's holding up well under trickle charge in the garage. I bought it from Pep Boys.

Did you get all of your original manuals? My code was on a plastic card in my manual.

Like others have chimed in already, a replacement battery is readily available at your local auto parts store. As with the radio security code, just call your dealer's service dept. They'll have you push a couple of buttons on the faceplate to get the serial #, and with that, they'll be able to retrieve the code for you. It took all of 5 minutes when I had it done long ago.

check the radio...sometimes the code is written on it...you have to take out the radio to see it!

I believe that the optima is better and lighter but needs modification to the battery tray to fit. Search the battery installation posts for help. Also you need a vent tube like the original!!

Define better. Better depends upon the use. Sure if you're tracking your car (which Gant does not), then the optima is the better battery. if you do not, then it is wasted money, as the only things that matter are warranty and cold cranking amps. Just a clarification.

Isn't the gel (optima) battery less likely to lose it's charge due to inactivity? If ruptured in a crash won't send liquid acid all over the place.
