Default If you have an RMS leak do you really have to fix it?

I'm thinking about getting my first 996. If I end up with an RMS issue it does not seem like that big a deal or cost to repair really. Just curious though, what happens if you don't repair it? Does it affect the car in anyway other than needing oil topped off more often? Does it erode further and get worse or ever become unrepairable?

Thanks again

Molly - RMS in not that big of a deal, way over blown IMO. Some RMS leaks are of the moderate "weeping" kind, which don't even drip on the garage foor. Others drip a little on the floor. If you were to get a RMS leak, you could just "let it ride" and keep your eye on the oil level. It could get worse over time and probably would do so. It is just a seal that gets replaced, so it will NOT get to the point where it becomes unrepairable. Average cost to replace it is $800.

Most people will tell you that it is not critical to fix. The worst case scenario is that oil leaks into the clutch. However, some will say that it is near impossible to get to the clutch. I think most people that get it fixed are just annoyed with the oil leaking and want peace of mind. If you have the money, just get it fixed. Otherwise, the general consensus is to wait until you need to replace the clutch.

I've never seen a post that someone with RMS leak got an oil ruined clutch. If mine wasn't warranty I'd have put a tray under it till it got bad/and or I needed a new clutch

Just got hit with an RMS leak...not too bad with only a couple of drips on the floor. The car has 30K miles (50K kms) and this is the second time (back in '04 was the last one). I have warranty coverage until end of May '07, so I'll get it done before then. I'm certainly not losing sleep over it.
Clutch is fine too.

Alright, cool. This makes me feel better about RMS. So that's one less thing to worry about when considering buying a 996. $800 is not that bad.

If it bothers you, go ahead and get it changed as they have an updated seal and some different bolts which may or may not help reoccurence of the issue. Mine was seeping just a little, would most likely have gotten worse, and the dealer warrantied it literally days before my new car warranty expired. We will see what happens........
