Hello everyone new to forum and new to Porsche… I own a 2000 996 6 speed coupe and every so often when I start the car it makes a loud noise like if the starter is getting stuck… has anyone had this problem and is the stater even the problem???
Any feedback is greatly appreciated thank you in advance for your attention

Nice looking car, Elias!! After I wash my car I get a squeal from the belt, but it goes aways after a second or 2. Not sure if that is when you hear it. Maybe after one of those Florida rain showers you hear it?

Elais - Welcome and Cnmgrats on getting a very nice looking P-car. Thanks for sharing the pics.
It soulds like it could be a belt that is slipping.

It sounds like the kind of noise you would get if you DID forget to let go of the key while starting? It could be the starter drive gear grinding briefly on the flywheel, maybe because of a faulty solenoid. Just a thought. it's really that loud of a mechanical noise..It happens only when I have a crowd or im showing the car to a buddy..

I had the same thing, sometimes it made the noise other times it didn't. I had the starter replaced and problem solved.
Don't know how you'd trouble shoot it, my garage knew it was the starter straight away. Cost £300 supplied and fitted in UK ($560ish)

I have a '99 and had the same problem when I first got the car last year. It suddenly stopped happening and hasn't come back in at least 11 months (knock on wood) - the car is my daily driver. In fact, I think I started a thread on this if you want to search for the replies.

I've had this problem intermittently for 18 months. I haven't sorted it yet, but I intend to. Following are things I've been told to check:
1. Power steering fluid (low fluid can lead to the PS pump making screaching noise at startup)
2. Polyrib belt (can slip if glazed or if belt tensioner has failed).
3. Idler pulley bearings
4. Alternator or voltage regulator
5. Starter
I've checked out the first three, but still intermittently have the problem. (especially when it is cold outside) I'm now checking out the alternator. One thing I'd recommend checking is your battery voltage. It should be 12.6 volts with no load on it. If it is 12.24 volts it is only 50% charged. I just checked mine and it is 12.35 volts, so it is only about 60% charged. This means the alternator has to work extra hard at startup to try to charge what is essentially a discharged battery. I suppose this could make the the belt slip at startup. I need to get the charge level above 12.45 (75%) before I can test the alternator. I'm guessing my problem might be related to the low battery and I either need to drive the car more often or get a battery maintaner (probably after replacing the battery).
