Default Problem with battery for key

I've recently purchased an 02 Targa. The car is great. I love the wide open roof. Bought it used in Fla and drove it home to Pa in Jan. Lots of fun and I was accompanied by my college age daughter. No real problems, but lately my key battery has a life span of 1 week. Bought a bunch on ebay for next to nothing. Any ideas?

Can only think that it's constantly transmitting (i.e. button is depressed or at least making electrical contact) and that is what's killing the battery.

Or does your key have the key-lock illuminating LED as well?

When you fit the new battery to the key - take a look at the spring mech and see if it can be bent to require a more positive action to trigger the key.

Also, get an eraser and use it to clean both internal contacts in the key, to make sure they are not corroded - corroded battery contacts could give the impression that the battery is flat when it isn't.

Replacement keys are expensive, so it's worth investigating this one to see if it can be fixed.

Also - don't touch the new battery as you install it - use a kleenex to hold it and don't get any contamination on the battery surfaces - this is standard practice for all button cells.

Chris.
