996 Tip rev limiter?
Hey guys quick question:
I thought I read on this site that when a tip is in park or neutral one cannot rev over 4000 rpm? I have been having a slight hesitation when at a stop I think primarily because previous owner used cheap gas. I have used techron twice now and have noticed an improvement.
But anyway, when I got home the other night I was revving it up a little and noticing where it settled back down and I saw that it went above 4000, so 5 or 6 times I revved it just about to red line and was suprised that it went that high... What is the deal with the rev limiter on a tip for a 99? (BTW, engine replaced on '04).
Anyway, with the PSE it sounded pretty sweet

cruisin,
If you want to experience what the rev limiter is like, put your car in park, and STAND on the accelerator....no, I'm not kidding.
The RPM's will level out at around 4000 RPM and stay there.

Here is an earlier quote from LTC regarding his experience with a tip rev limiter, I read somewhere else that a tip guy was asked at a DE event to rev his engine in pit or something and he said it would only do 4000.
I am not sure I actually hit a limiter as I revved to about 6800. I was hoping to blow out alittle carbon, and wasn't actually thinking it would rev as high as it did.

Thanks Firehawk,
Thats why I am asking, perhaps when engine was replaced the rev limiter got screwed up and I need to take it to the dealer to be checked out. But I wanted a little more info before I called them. If rev limit should be 4000 in park then mine is definitely not functioning.

Thanks again Firehawk, good info wish I had it a few days ago .
Tippy, Yeah it's not something I recommend. I only tried revving it out a bit because I thought it would max out at 4000, and the stupid car still had occasional idle shake after another bottle of techron. I usually use the tip for in town traffic so it rarely sees above 3000 rpms, I thought that may be perpetuating the carbon buildup.
Then when it went past, like a kid that bit his tongue and has to keep screwing with it to see if it still hurts, I had to blip it again to make sure it wasn't working the way I expected. Oh well, no blood no foul, car is working exactly as before no better no worse.

2002 is when they added the 4k limit when the vehicule was stationary to avoid torque convertor damage. Probably people trying to 'dump the clutch' in a tip caused this.
