Get an EVO.....I had a WRX, I now have an EVO as my ski vehicle w/toyo mud and snow proxes. The chassis and the overall drive quality and experience is better than the WRX.....my opinion only.

I used to own a 95 NSX, and my coolant tank had a leak, and i had the cam end seals and gallery plugs leak.. a $1700 job... sounds just like the 996... not a big deal really

The 964 has more power that what??? Not a 993, or 996. Plus the 964 has the ugliest tail lights ever and bumpers. The 964 is the most boring 911 ever with the 996 being a close second. If you want a good first 911, get a 78-83 911 sc, or an 84-88 911 carerra. I have always been told to avoid the 964 and 2.7 911's from 74-77. I had a 74 targa, and it was a fun car, but it developed the head stud problem and that is an expensive fix. I have never heard anyone say that the 964 is the sweet spot for entering porsche ownership.

Well that's because internet hype has a way of prolonging the hysteria for problems that have long since been sorted out. Heck, I happen to own a 2000 996 and a 1984 Carrera and I love them both, but I've been around enough 964's to know that those cars are better in every way than my old Carrera (other than weight).
As for 996 engine issues, I have a 46,000 mile, six year old 996 and I'm happy as can be with it. I use the car as my daily driver and occasionally track it. The car runs perfectly. The engine is, and always has been, dry. I've thrashed the heck out of it at Willow Springs raceway and it didn't complain one bit. And mine's the dreaded 3.4 (gasp).
The later 3.6 has had the RMS issues sorted, so if you want a little more peace of mind, pick up a 2002 or later 996.

There's so much bad info in this thread I don't know where to start. I hope if anyone's serious about buying, they're getting their info from various sources and not just an internet forum.
