Default Is buying an extended warranty on 2001 911 w 22K miles worth the money?

I am really stoked about finding this forum where there is a bunch of Porsche experts.

My 2001 911 factory warranty expired. My 911 is only used on the weekends, and has only 22K miles. Is it a godd idea to purchase extended warranty on our cars?

Cheers

I wouldn't buy a car without it - all depends on how long you've had the car and how well you know the maintenance record.

If I were buying a 2001 I wouldn't do so without buying a warranty.

Look at it this way - you can buy an aftermarket warranty for say, $1500 that covers most catastrophic events. Let's say that the warranty goes to 100K miles (mine does) and you have to use it on one occasion for a major item - chances are that it will pay for itself.

The devil is in the details - you must read the small print to see what's covered. If the big stuff isn't covered, then it might not be worth it. Check the named parts list and the list of parts that are specifically excluded - that will tell you the true value of the policy.

A warranty is just an insurance policy. And just like insurance, you'll never appreciate it until you need it. The first repair pays for the policy, so you're basically trading your money in early. Now, the SECOND repair, that's like getting free money

Thanks for the tip. Actually, I have owned my 2001 996 since 2000, so I have all the service records in my possession.

Your warranty goes to 100K? Wow. How much did you have to pay for that?

I contacted my nearby dealer, and they recommended $5.000 aftermarket warranty which is for 4 years and covers almost everything under factory warranty which is pretty much bumper-to-bumper. Is getting the insurance for big expensive items such as powertrain better on these cars since most 911's are weekend cars anyway without too many miles being put on them?

Buy the extended warranty and enjoy the "piece of mind" that comes with it.

Well, at least you know the service history, that's good.

I have an Autosource warranty and I believe that I paid around $2600 for it at the time of purchase. $5K sounds a little expensive.

I purchased the Platinum coverage level. It would be wise to look at the link posted earlier and compare the coverage to the Prizm warranty that was mentioned, just to compare what you get for the cost.

Looks like that AutoSource policy does not cover the RMS. It says gaskets and seals are only covered as part of a covered component failure.

Just make sure that it is not Easy Care...they have recently hosed me. I have dealt with others that are much better. Read the contract and not the published brochures. Make sure that you will get replacement parts and not crap such as them remachining parts. Also make sure they cover diagnostic labor. If you do not look at the details you could find yourself paying more than half of a repair bill that should have been covered.

My local Porsche dealer (memphis) recommended an ext. warr. through Fidelity for my '03 996 Turbo. Mine is a daily driver and has 48,500 miles (fact. warr. ends at 50,000 miles). The ext. warr. is $4,200 for 3yrs and seems to be pretty comprehensive and has $0 deductable. Has anyone used Fidelity?

996 Turbo sounds sweet. Some said to buy the aftermarket warranty before factory warranty expires. Does buying the aftermarket warranty get more expensive once the factory warranty expires? My dealer in L.A. recommended a few places, but I need to go to the office to get the info.

You are correct. Autosource does not cover seals or diagnostic work.

That is what my local dealership recommended to me also. Although i was quoted 4 years with a $100 deductable for $4300. my car is a 99 with about 56k on it. I am still researching to see what i can find out there.

as always read the fine print on the contract.

Seem to me me it does. mos will ask if you are under a factory warranty. but i think it is mostly buy how many miles and how old the car is.
