Default How to prime windshield washer pump

I ran out of washer fluid a few days ago and even though I've refilled the reservoir, the pump doesn't seem to be priming.

I can hear it spinning but even after 20-30 seconds it will not draw fluid into the system.

The owners manual is silent on this, is there some "trick" I don't know about?

Thanks for any assistance.

Sounds like a hose may have come loose. Take a look under the car to see if any washer fluid is dripping, then trace the leak. VW cars tend to have this problem with push-fit connectors that loosen with age, so I wouldn't be surprised if Porsches are the same.

If it's not a disconnected hose issue.... I've been in this spot with previous cars and it always took numerous squirt attempts to get everything going again. I would think this may be the same with the p-car. Just don't hold the lever for a real long time as the pump is not really meant for continous duty.

Hey NNH,
thanks for asking......well....my problems are never quite that easy!

I took the battery cover and other plastic cover off, refilled the reservoir and started pulling on the lever.....hmmm...still not priming. So I stepped out of the car.....into a HUGE puddle in the middle of the garage! great!

So I called the Mrs. to test it while I watched, when the pump motor is running fluid is POURING out from inside the drivers side wheelwell near the top of the strut tower.

Can't see it from inside the car, can't see it from outside the car. Next step will be pulling the wheelwell plastic all out and getting a look. At this point I'm hoping it's just a hose and not a cracked washer motor.

Damn.

It is not uncommon on Boxstirs for the hose to come off from the tank and you get washer fluid in the left front wheel well.

I found my leak at the tee that separates the flow to each wiper. The tee is a 2 piece unit that contains a check valve and a screen. The fitting came apart wont stay together under the pressure of the system. The replacement tee is part number 996 628 102 00, about $10 from Pelican
