Creaking noise when turning steering wheel
The front right of my 996 has developed a noise, not sure if its normal or not. I only notice it at during low speed turns (ie parking lots). The creaking noise sounds similar to the creaking noise stereotypical of wooden ships (well at least what they sound like in movies).
To diagnose I have tried turning off the engine, but keeping the key in position 2 (all systems on) and turning the steering wheel ever so slightly. The noise is definitely present when turning the wheel either way. I do not notice it on bumps (still need to confirm again). Any ideas of what it could be?
My dealer is far away, so I am debating whether its worth the effort to diagnose this under the CPO, or just getting a local shop to take a look.
Thanks.

Three Wheelin'
I had this happen to me in my Boxster S AND in my 996. It's a pretty easy fix, but get this, mine came back a few weeks ago and I've been a little lazy. But it is very annoying and I am loathe to imagine how it sounds when I am parking on the street. Thanks for the reminder, I'll have to schedule to get it repaired post haste.
Incidentally, from what I recall, I think they just tightened some bushings or other and lubed everything up. I don't believe that it was a very serious issue but it sure is annoying. Frankly, I think it's the damn terrible roads up here in NYC.

I fixed this same type of squeeking/groaning noise on a boxster. It was the sway bar bushings. We first tried removing the clamps that attach them to the body(the fixed mounts) and lubed them with some grease, but the noise came back and had to replace them later.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it will come back again. My car has made that sound since I owned it, it comes and goes, it sounds like the ball joints are dry on the control arms up front. The bad thing is, if it is, they will eventually have to be replaced due to galling. I am not 100% sure if that is the problem but that sounds like it.
