Thumbs up Happy 50th to the Orient Express!

Well the Orient Express is now officially over 50! 50,000 miles that is. On our trip up to Portland and the Porsche Parade this year, the car rolled over 50K. Despite the 2 engine replacements, the car has been very low maintenance, and a real pleasure to own. Porsche has treated me very well with this car.

At Parade, the car managed to win its class, but was edged out of the Division award by a 997 Club Sport that was less than 6 months old, had only 1500 miles on its clock and was trucked in from Florida.

That trailer princess barely edged me out, so it was not a bad showing for an old hag that got herself up to the show on her own 4 wheels! Parade was lots of fun, and at the Concours, I learned of several new places that dirt can hide that I did not know existed. We had a 5:15 am placement call so we were ready to go by sunrise.

Porsche had a nice display of vintage cars, and of course Sally Carrera was there.

And a great 1966 Carrera 6

On the way back, we took the scenic route back through northern California, and got to see Paul Bunyan and his Gulf Blue Ox.

We drove down through Crescent City, and on to Mendocino for lunch.

All in all a good time was had by all!

Young whipper snapper! My 2000 Cab just turned 86,000 today. Seems like it was just yesterday when I picked her up with 3 miles on the clock.

Congratulations!

Gary - Congrats on winning you class! Now I know why your undercarriage looks the way it does. Very nice pics thanks for sharing! BTW, did you get Sally's autograph?

Just curious, how many days does it take to prep your car for the show?

You deserved the win Milage should be taken into consideration at those events. I could never understand why a car that was less then a year old and had a few hundred miles on it competes. it's like of course the car is going to win over the rest of the Daily drivers in the class. There should be a class just for new cars and it should have been very difficult for them to win the devison. Anyway as it has been for years your car is stunning! Congrats for driving her like she should be driven!

The initial preparation took about 4 days. I would focus on one area each day, and take my time going through that area closely. For the storage and interior, once I had it the way I liked it, I covered the carpets etc., in commercial plastic wrap. This stuff is available at Home Depot and is designed to protect new carpet in home construction from dirt from the workers. Once we got to Portland, then I took another 2 days to tidy up the car from the trip, and the morning of the show, off came the plastic wrap. i was very lucky in that the drive from the Bay Area to Portland was a straight shot with no rain.

The first replacement engine was because of the RMS area being out of tolerance on the original engine, and the second replacement was because the first replacement engine had an internal failure after 500 miles.

Both times, the issue was resolved quickly and professionally, and turnaround was less than 36 hours.

Both were module swap-outs. This 3rd engine has been strong and trouble-free. In fact the entire car has been very reliable.

As you can see from the maintenance record it is been a very good vehicle.

6 days to prep for the show? WOW!

Gary, two engines? I knew you had one engine replaced, but was unaware of the second replacement. BTW, is your middle name "Bob" ?

No Bob's here, You are thinking of my cousin, Bob Loblaw.

Cars are like dust magnets. They are impossible to keep totally clean, that is why Concours is so tough, it is like a game of cat and mouse to find the reclusive dirt before the Judges do.
