Default Dealer Mistake?

I recently took my car to the local P-dealer, in Reading, PA, for a state inspection and emmisions test. I later discovered a 3 inch rip on the face of the spare tire cover. I know for a fact that the rip was not there when I took the car to the dealer because I myself detailed the car a couple of days before and remember wiping the cover which was in perfect condition.

I called the dealer to report the rip and he told me that it was unlikley the tech did it because he didn't think they are required to check the spare during a state inspection. He also said that their techs are very meticulous and that if they had ripped the cover they would have reported it. The service rep said that he would call me back after speaking to the service manager however I have not received a call and two weeks have now passed.

Am I being too fanatical? Should I just let the issue drop? It makes me mad everytime I see the rip because it is in plain view when you look inside the trunk, in fact your eyes are immeditaly drawn to the rip because the rest of the trunk is immaculate.

I posted a prior complaint about my hood bonnet being stuck - hell maybe the dealer rigged it so I wouldn't see the rip.

I assume you're referring to the canvas/mesh cover? As peeved as you are, at least be glad it was the cover and not the paint job or leather interior.

Noone is looking inside of the trunk, so I agree with Ucube. It sucks, but it could be much worse. I don't think you'll be able to prove a tech did it.

Just drop the issue and never bring your car back to the dealership again.

Agree 100% with Vove as long as you are 100% that it was during the time your car was with them that it happened. Not something that is a big deal but it is the principle that they would have "accidentally" done this and denied it.

They should but they're all ******** and since you can't prove it, well then you'll just have to take your business elsewhere because that's all you can do.

I always do a walkaround with the service writer before I drop the car off, and I don't drive the car off the lot until I've done a thorough inspection. In the past I've had my wheels damaged, and a gash put in the steering wheel by careless service people.
