In my 993 I had it geared to do 141 top end. Split the shifts evenly 2 through 6. Makes for an incredible track car. If you use non-factory gears they will most likely be noisey. The gears are not straight cut.

Keep in mind that the 996 box is not as strong as the 993 box. However, the 997 box is an improvement. I've seen the insides of just about every Porsche box at Brian Copan's shop.

Gator,

You're still what, saving 3-6k on a supercharger setup. Look at the bright side

another downside for shorter gears on a street car would be gas consumption. This would obviously depend on how shortened the gears were.

A shorter final drive does not necessarily mean your first gear will be useless. This obviously depends on how much shorter you want the final drive to be. On my last car first gear was definately shorter than stock...but far from useless.

Now if you had a porsche with a shorter final drive that limited the top speed to say 160 and raced a fully stock same car. The one with the shorter gearing will reach 160 first...the only downside is the car will only be able to hit 160 rather than 174/180

I look at this way, there is a give and take for everything we do to our cars, especially when we talk about engine or transmission modifications.

I have the EVOMS supercharger, GT3 Clutch and lightweight flywheel on my 996 and 1st and 2nd are virtually worthless, I guess I need them, but damn, if you take the time to blink before shifting, you will bounce off the rev-limiter under hard acceleration.

With the added power of the supercharger and the free spinning lightweight flywheel, I had to really get used to "listening" for new shift points. Although the gears have not changed over the stock setup, the sound of the shift points changes after such extensive modifications due to the faster acceleration. I have found that I have to begin the shifting process around 1000 rpms sooner in 1st, 750 rpms sooner in 2nd and 500 rpms sooner in 3rd with my setup to avoid bouncing off the rev-limiter, and that's with the short shifter.

Taller would be nice, but I surely like the kick in the pants provided by the stock setup with the EVOMS system. I might look at different gearing when the tranny gives way to my right foot. The added power of the supercharger gives me more leeway for experimentation.

The EVO S/C also lowers your rev limitier so yes you will have to get used to that as well....
