Default RMS Advice

My gearbox had a problem with it's bearings so I've taken apart the gearbox and differential. Mine is a 99 with 35000 mi and never had a problem with oil leaks. The car has been tracked and never lost any oil. 99 models are infamous for RMS issues and it would be a good time to replace the RMS now. Should I do it or assume I'm one of the lucky ones and leave it alone? Also any advices on light flywheels Does it make a lot of difference?
Thanks

A 99 with only 35k miles, that's pretty low mileage. Since you're up to your elbows in car guts I would see no harm in installing the improved seal.

Your post makes it seem like almost all 996s have RMS leaks. Although it's impossible to get definitive information regarding RMS leaks if you aren't on Porsche's payroll, I've been getting consistent information from Porsche Service techs who are willing to talk, and they suggest that no more than 20% of the 996s they service have ever had an RMS leak. Moreover they also said that they haven't had one Porsche owner report another RMS leak after it was replaced with the new seal. So if it's not leaking, you are part of the 80% group that doesn't have an RMS leak, and not the 20% that experienced leaks. So be happy, don't worry.

Personally I would never touch an RMS if it's dry. I guess I fall in the 80 percent category, 89K miles and with original seal. Never had an RMS issue.

If it ain't broke don't fix it!...or...If it ain't broke fix it until it is! Your choice.

On the other hand, Porsche has a new RMS design which is also on the 997 and is supposedly much more reliable, according to the service manager at my local Porsche dealership. They had replaced my RMS with the old style last summer, and just offered to redo it with the new one gratis, even though mine was not leaking. They provide a two year warranty on their work, and I didn't want to have that expire and develop another leak, so I had them do it when the car was in for other work (starter problem). So far, so dry!

i'd leave it untouched. if it hasn't leaked in all these years, it probly won't.
