Post Off Topic: Luxury SUVs

Hey all - been a long time since I've had a Rennlist post. Haven't been driving the C4 much, as it stays down South while I'm in New England 9 months of the year now.

Along these lines, I am considering a Range Rover for the Massachusetts winters. The Mercedes G-Wagon is only a bit more, though, and caught my eye. Does anyone own either and have any feedback, either on each car individually or a comparison? I have driven the Rover and like it, haven't gotten to try out the Mercedes - seems like a less common find.

Thanks

Mike

I don't own either, but I have spend time with both. Honestly, I can't see how Mercedes gets away with charging what they do for the G500 (or G55 for that matter). It really isn't that great.

Yes, it looks kind of cool, and has that "look at me" appeal, but it's slow, it sucks gas, it isn't very roomy, it handles like an old truck, and the ergonomics are awful.

It reminds me too much of the Hummer, which is another military vehicle that's been given some luxury to sell it to the masses. And that's exactly how the G-Wagen feels. Like a military truck with some leather.

Maybe if Jeep added some wood and some leather to the TJ, they could ask close to $100000CDN for it too?

As for the Range Rover, definitely the better choice of these two. Looks great, is comfortable, fit and finish is great, the BMW engine is great. Not particularily fast or exciting to drive, but it does a relatively good job at everything.

Personally, I would lean more towards a Cayenne or X5, as they handle better on-road. Having said that, I need offroad and towing ability too, so the X5 may not be the best choice.
