you can NOT dye the top black unless it is already black. trust me on this. I did the research on it since my dealer stopping covering the top under warranty. There is a top dye out there (forgot the brand) but they clearly state that it is ONLY for faded black tops.

I did it the correct way and spent the money to have it done right......factory top and installed with warranty. Not cheap though. I think the total bill was about $3K for parts and labor.

A replacement fabric top from Porsche is about $2200. + labor for installation. There may be cheaper solutions out there. Check with your local high-end automotive upholstery shop. The cross bow, and roll bar covers are under $200.

Try calling Duettomotors.com, although they specialize in Miatas, they carry tops for all cars at very resonable prices. These guys were fantastic to work with and the top I got (944 cab) is very durable. I have had it for over two years with no fading or wearing. I don't see the 996 tops listed, however, they didn't list the 944 until I called and ordered one from them.

You should get the new top from Gahh with the glass mirror.

I replaced mine (2002 - using existing glass) with a GAHH for $1575 installed.

I paid $75 extra to have the other stuff (roll bar covers, etc) recovered and about $100 for a yard of fabric to match.

Probably your best bet just to get a new top and shop around for the install.
