OK, I admit it. I don't know how to change oil.
When it comes to cars, I am technically incompetent. I just never had the opportunity to work on cars, so I never learned. Please don't judge me.
Well, now it is approaching time for me to get an oil change on my 996. I think the dealer will try to charge me $300, and I know that it is HIGHWAY ROBBERY (not all of us Porsche drivers are filthy rich).
Anyways, I think I would like to attempt this myself. I know I need a wrench, an oil pan, the filter + oil. Do I need to jack the car up? Is there a step-by-step (with photos) on how to do this?
Thanks

Like you, before I got my 996 1 1/2 years ago, I had never worked on any cars. With the help of members on this board and Renntech, I now do all the work on my car (including oil changes, new exhaust, RoW M030 suspension, coolant tank, etc.). It has been fun and the money I've saved in labor has gone into mods (valuing my time at $0/hr, of course). The oil change is very easy, just make sure you have a large enough container to catch the oil, as it comes out fast once the plug is fully loosened.

Once you do this and realize how easy it is, it will **** you off to bring the car in for anything.
In case no one has mentioned it just becareful you don't strip the oil filter screwing it in...

As Riad mentioned, only hand tighten the filter.

the only change that I'd make to the oil draining process is to remove the filter while the oil is draining. Then, once the oil flow is down to a fine stream, install the oil filter. Every time that I've changed the oil, the flow increased after installing the filter. Once the flow has reduced, you can screw the plug back in.
