Hi there. I thought I would ask this before I get it checked out by the service department but today I noticed my car wouldn't start but once I try again(press clutch) it started and when it did start there was some wheezing noise for like 2-3 seconds then it's gone(not the fan thing). Does anyone know what the problem maybe. Once it's started everything is fine. Regards. Mike
After starting a couple of times the sound is like when with some cars you here an overcharge of the ignition when you keep trying to start the car but the sound stays that way even with normal startup. What you guys think? Regards. Mike
Wished it was that but its not a whine more like a severe ignition overecharge cept 20x louder. Really loud wheezing for 2 seconds only at startup. Mike
Hey Loren- it's going in thursday so i'll will find out what it is. Other then noise and occasional no startup after one try the car is running fine when it starts-lol. hope it's just the starter and not something else major. Regards. Mike
Well here's the update- the service department(Porsche dealership) cannot locate the cause of the noise so they have to call Porsche and see if they have any tech knowledge on this. They confirmed that car is running fine after startup but said there's a possibility engine has to be pulled out to locate problem area but could be as simple as starter problem and needs replacement. They told me they wanted to make sure that it isn't a serious problem so will get answer by tomorrow from Porsche. Oh well what can you do-other then play the waitng game and see what happens. As usual the dealership has always treated me well and will have a good sleep tonite-LOL!!! I'll post tomorrow and let you guys know what's going to happen. Regards. Mike
What dealership is that?
Pull the engine? Why?
They should be able to inspect the starter/flywheel teeth by pulling the starter. You can also test the starter off the car. Worse case they might have to pull the transmission. I really don't see a need to pull the engine particularly if the DME does not show any faults. Sorry, just my 2 cents... <img src="graemlins/a_smil17.gif" border="0" alt="[blabla]" />
My 99 C2coupe was making an aweful noise from the engine. It sounded very much like a pully noise. We removed the air box, removed the accessories belt and the noise was still there. Weird. After 20 minutes of searching for the noise while vehicle on lift, it ended up being a VERY loose spark plug. What we were hearing was actually compression squeaking by the loose plug. Remove plug, lube it up, put back in, noise gone.
I didn't really go into detail with Sonnen Porsche but they said they were kinda dumbfounded where the noise was coming. I presumed that they did a few tweaks here and there ie lube some parts but couldn't solve or locate the noise. I'm assuming they checked out the DME fault codes and didn't find anything so maybe that's why they couldn't give me an answer. It's strange that both Sonnen and myself confirmed that the car is running fine after startup and no leaks to be found but the noise(only lasts for 2-3 seconds) is a mystery to them. Since I'm off today I'll get more details on what's going on a also offer the recommendations you suggested and post them. What would you recommend if they said the engine has to be pulled-should I get a second opinion? I don't want to do that since car is fine other then the noise. Regards. Mike
John with reference to the spark plug did the noise occured only at startup or the noise was always noticeable when driving? My car sometimes wouldn't kick over after 1-2 tries(intermittent-mostly starts on first try) but would start eventually. Thanks. Mike
Mike, I suggest you get a digital sound / video recorder and stand at the open engine compartment a few mornings as someone else starts up the car - since you only get 3 seconds to localize the noise. You need digital to capture the noise as accurately as possible. Good luck.
Update-just got a call from Sonnen this morning and Porsche has not repsonded back yet so will wait til 3:30-4 pm and pick up whether or not noise has been located and fixed. Since they don't open weekends better to pick up my car rather then let it sit there for the weekend. They instructed to me to let them keep it over there til 3:30-4 maybe Porsche will have any solutions. I'm not too worried since cars running well so I'm assuming it's related to the start up process area. God I miss drving my car(my loaner was a Passat 1.8 T-nice car-always loaned me VW's but one time had none availble so loaned me a Audi TT convertible). Regards. Mike
