Default gotta replace the tranny

greetings,

wanted to ask for anyone's advice on the issue of replacing my tranny. here's the skinny: its a 1999 996 cabrio i've owned for 3 years. bought it with 9000 miles on it and it now has 42000. it was a CPO car and warranty just ended this past december, duh!

anyway i brought it to the dealership because it was popping out of third gear. i asked them to investigate it for me. i thought it would be an engine mount or pilot bearing issue. low and behold i was told there was an internal failure with the tranny (manual tranny) and the remedy was to replace the tranny. they quoted me 7600 bucks, i didn't think that was too bad.

my question is this...do you guys think i'm crazy for paying that kind of cash or should i go to an independent?

thanks

Check your shifter linkage and take it to an indept for second opinion. Perhaps you can trade it in for a newer car?

Yup, the popping out of gear is a typical issue. I have a TT in the shop, same problem in 2nd gear. 7600 installed is not a bad price at all.

Good time to trade up.You will never recoup your 7,600.Add the 7,600 to your car and shop around first.Everybody thinks they have to act fast. Not true.shop around first give yourself a week or two if you do not fined anything you like have it fixed. My 2 cents

i would think that only being 5 months out of warranty, they should still cover a major repair like this, sounds premature!!

My 99 tranny pops out of 6th gear.....I have been researching my options for
~ 6 months & was going to send the tranny to PowerHaus to get it fixed.
He quoted me $1500.00 + ~$500.00 shipping

I got LUCKY & picked up a used tranny last week for $1,000.00

But, if you were quoted $7,600 installed for a NEW tranny, that sounds
like a steal from what I have been seeing.

your comments are appreciated. i love my car and have decided to replace the tranny for 7,600.

while i hate to admit it. i'm a glutton for punishment after dragging around with an srt charger a friend of mine has. i remember having a bad launch against this guy. i smoked my tires so much i couldn't find a gear to get traction. i know i should have hit the brakes and restarted but i threw her into 3rd and grinded the gears something awful. i think that might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. the car has been driving great ever since (2 months) ...until now. so, as i said before...i'm a glutton for punishment.

i'm pretty happy its not going to be as expensive as it could have been. lesson learned.

i feel like a dumbass for doing something like that to my car, then again my most favorite time i've had in the car was a backroads night ride in the the sandhills of north carolina. i had four people in the car and and was sailing down a a hill crossing a small bridge way too fast then.....fireworks...yeah, sparks from under the car came flying out in all directions about six feet out....

i gotta hand it to porsche; when i think of all the stupid stuff i put my car through, they build a solid beast. i'll carry the new tranny as a badge of honor.

rx2476, people normally don't admit their own faulty only blame on manufacture. admit your fault is a brave action. kudos to you! good luck with new tranny.

Yikes! Let's get the VIN number of that beauty so none of us ever contemplate buying it one day!

Seriously though, nice to see you're enjoying it. Sounds like lesson learned, and inspiration for us all.

I would have looked for a rebuild/used tranny.....because 7600 bucks....half of that is labor!
There are shop that can repair those things cheaper..or you can buy a used one much much cheaper.
just my 2 cents..7600 is a lot of mods!!! like a SC...almost

I was at Brian Copan's shop and had a chance to see the insides of a 996 trans next to a 993 trans. The 993 is hands down the better built of the two.

Brian also showed me the roll pins used in the factory boxes compared to what he puts in rebuilds. For a few cents more you can put one it that is far less likeyl to break.

Brian told me that he had heard $4500 for a rebuilt one with exchange. Install would be on top of that price.
